Q: Would really appreciate some help in understanding the difference in size between the small and the xsmall. i have a 3 year old.

I can't tell for sure on the S vs XS, but I ordered my 7 yr old daughter a SZ M and it fits her well. I would estimate that a S would fit 5/6 and an XS would be a 3/4. But that's just a guess going by the fact that a M fits like a 7/8

Q: What is the height for the size small?

I'm not sure about the small, but the large was size 10. It was a little snug and short on my 11 yr old (58" tall and about 80 lbs). So we reordered an xl, which turned out to be a size 12. It was a little better, just still not sure on the fit. We live in minnesota, so we dress in layers underneath! So unless you want it snug fitting, I would recommend going up a size from what the chart says. ** I tried the large on my 7 yr old (who is 48" tall and about 50 lbs), just to see how it would fit. It's slightly big in her, so I would think she would need a medium.** Not sure if this helps you with the sizing for the small! But thought I'd let you know about our experience. It's a cute costume though! We also ordered goggles, which made it complete.
