Q: Does there have to be something in between the two bladders?

It comes with a separator, but we actually didn't use it. We do have separate heaters under each side. We have had several waterbeds over the years and this is by far the most comfortable we've ever had! The dual style minimizes the effect of one person's movement on the other. Though we can feel the place where the two fit next to each other, it is hardly noticeable and in no way detracts from the comfort.

Q: Is this just the top where the water bladder goes or is it all the way down in the lower mattress section as well? is the lower section necessary?

The bladders are one piece each. Not separate pieces on top of each other.

Q: Can this mattress be emptied and stored for a later use? Concerned that mold will grow inside….

I am sure you can. I have done this in the past and as long all the caps are on tight so there is no air access and it is stored indoors you should be ok. The one time I did it it was all good.
