Original Sprite & Midget: The Restorer's Guide (Original Series)

A nice “coffee table book” for the enthusiast, but not much help in answering restoration questions.
I purchased this book thinking it would provide details helpful in maintaining and upgrading my ’60 Bugeye. While the book has a lot of details about how the cars were designed and engineered, and details on when changes were implemented on the production runs, what is missing is detail on restoring a car. For example, the text says the front frame rails, radiator pillar and the front face of the suspension crossmember flashed over in black”, but it does not note the type of paint nor the finish, i.e.: matte or gloss, to use. Nor does it define “flashed over”. And the photos that show any of these areas do not seem to always match the text. Another example is the dash. There is no single diagram or photo indicating the proper or correct layout of the components on the dash. There are two photos showing a dash but neither are labeled and they don’t match. But the book if you would enjoy reading the history of the cars or if you would find it helpful to know that only the front camshaft bearing is replaceable. But if you would like clear direction on what correctly refinished rear axle assembly looks like or the correct routing of the wiring harnesses this is not the book you need.

Terry Horler's excellent book
Now reprinted, June 2011, so you don't need £90+ for an unsigned previous print. This book is not just for those that might want to get their Spridgets to original specification it's also invaluable as a source of much cosmetic and technical information and is a great book in itself on the car with lovely photos, so a brilliant book all round. There may be a few errors in the exact point of production changes but this is perhaps to be expected with the huge volume of this type of information in the book and the usual confusion or lack of detail from factory records - only the pendant restorer need worry and that worry will be where else to go for more exact details. Also invaluable to potential, new and existing owners are the reprints of the original Drivers Handbooks, such as:UK - MG Midget Mk 3 Owners Handbook (Official Handbook): Part No. Akd7596 (also covers AH Sprite Mk4)UK - rubber bumper, Triumph 1500 engine model (MG Midget 1500 - GAN 6, 1974/5-1979/80, also called a Mk3 here) - MG Owners' Handbook: Part No. Akm3229: Mg Midget Mk 3: Part No. Akm3229 USA - r/b 1976 - MG Owners' Handbook: Mg Midget Mk 3 (Us 76): Part No. Akm3436 USA - r/b 1979 - MG Midget Mk 3: Owners' HandbookMG Midget Mk 3 Owners Handbook (Official Handbook): Part No. Akd7596MG Owners' Handbook: Part No. Akm3229: Mg Midget Mk 3: Part No. Akm3229MG Owners' Handbook: Mg Midget Mk 3 (Us 76): Part No. Akm3436MG Midget Mk 3: Owners' Handbook
