Foundation(s) of Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophy
This is the first, most basic, and most approachable book for those who want to make a beginning in understanding what Rudolf Steiner is all about. It was also the first book he wrote, and to read it attentively is to follow his thinking/grappling with the question (HOW DO WE KNOW??) in real time. It is a book for people who WANT to think, who love thinking. For those who are wanting a different way to approach Steiner, the basic book would be How to Know Higher Worlds (previous title Knowledge of Higher Worlds). For both kinds of people there are plenty more good books to come, but these two books will give you the solid foundation you need to build further.

Rudolf Steiner's Theory of Knowledge
Steiner's epistemology on knowledge although dense is not unreadable, some looking up may be needed for the layman but Steiner lays out a path that leads logically to his later books such as the philosophy of freedom and his later esoteric work. A first step to not only understanding Rudolf Steiner and Anthroposophy but also as an insight into Goethe's underlying philosophy of knowledge vs. Kant's more accepted albeit sense based reasoning. Highly recommended.
