The Engines of Pratt & Whitney: A Technical History as Told by the Engineers Who Made the History

Excellent book. Very high quality technical history.
First, let me tell you what this book is not. It is not an engineering text. There's no math at all. No theory. It is also not a casual read for laypersons. This book is a technical history. There are many graphs, figures, diagrams, illustrations and cutaways that make it more than a historical narrative, though it is that too. The period covered is from the very beginnings of the company in the 1920s to its latest large hi-bypass turbofans, through about 2005. The latest development of the PW1000G is not included, or mentioned only briefly. There is extensive study of the radial piston engines - about half the book. The other half is dedicated to the jets. There is no discussion of Pratt & Whitney Canada. The coverage of engine models is absolutely exhaustive. The discussion of technical trends and solutions unique to Pratt & Whitney are interesting and enjoyable if this type of technical material is your thing. I would recommend this book to professionals in the aeronautics field, and other enthusiasts who's interest is more than superficial. You'll need to be somewhat obsessed with aircraft engines and their history to really enjoy this book. If it's your kind of thing, the book is very good.

Excellent book
Whilst a little scattered in its content, the detail and insight from the engineers that actually designed and built the engines is absolutely first class and makes this a better experience than the more corporate publications from other manufacturers. You probably need to have some background in aircraft engines to get the most out of this one.

Best way to evaluate piston and jet are too engines ...
Pratt & Whitney book most likely needs some of the detail and technical contents that the similar book in 3 Volumes of Rolls-Royce has, with a technical descriptive style that explains the important characteristics of each engine. Best way to evaluate piston and jet are too engines is to get the explanation of their configuration and capability "in the nude" without any "Marketing Dress On". Hope P&W wake up and pay attention to this, mostly because their engines are "too bloody good" to keep many of their details under cover ! . Time will come lads, I Hope !!CheersA.Rangel Abrham
