Q: Can this work for turning off for five minutes instead of turning on?

No, it will not work that way. It has a set of open contacts that close when you turn the switch. You should be able to find a timer with closed contacts that open when you turn the dial. If you need more information on this, you could ask where to find one on this site and then I could hopefully take some time to find that answer then.

yes, you just twist counter clockwise to OFF and it will turn off

It should be. That is exactly what mine was used for and where it was installed. :)
