Favorite of series
I love how Parris develops her characters across the series, with each book introducing new complex characters. Each book provides descriptive insights in to Tudor England and European politics. The political themes reminds me that the world has been divided in the past, so today's issues are not new, and our world will continue to evolve. I appreciate Bruno's philosophical approach to his adventures.

A Vivid Story
The suspense in the story kept me interested throughout the book. There was sufficient detail of characters, locations and history so a reader could learn of the times while being fully entertained.

A complicated thriller
_Execution_ is the 6th Giordano Bruno novel by S.j. Parris; I had inadvertently read the books out of order, but the hallmark of a good writer is the ability to pick up a book out of sequence and still be able to follow plot and character. While I suspect there is some background between characters that I have missed, and clearly there were broad references to earlier events, this in no-way detracted from what is otherwise a well-told piece of historical fiction overlaying a complicated espionage thriller. In _Execution_, Bruno is brought to England in the employ of Sir Francis Walsingham, Elizabeth I's spy-master: his task to help frame the imprisioned Mary (Catholic rival to Elizabeth and threat to her position and to Protestants throughout the kingdom) as well as to learn who murdered (and mutilated) another operative of Walsingham's - her death may jeopardize an entire network of spies and informers. It is a complicated thriller as Bruno must first work his way into he trust of those plotting against Elizabeth while simultaneously set traps to learn who the killer of Walsingham's other operative was without giving his role away, all the while attempting to lay hands on incriminating evidence against Mary. Beyond the careful plotting of the story is first-rate historical fiction, the details and minutae of place, distance, dress, social class and mixing of real historical persons with a fictional story make this a fantastic read.
