Fun and solid SDR starter kit
This RTL-SDR bundle has been a great little setup to play around with. I liked that it came with the radio and antennas together, so I could get started without having to piece everything out separately. The aluminum enclosure feels solid, and the size makes it easy to keep near the computer without taking up much room. Setup was straightforward once the software was installed, and it has been stable for me while scanning around and testing different frequencies. The antennas are useful for experimenting, and the SMA connection feels secure when swapping things around. It is a nice value because it gives you a lot to learn with in one package, especially if you are curious about SDR, local signals, weather radio, aviation, or just seeing what is out there. It has been a fun, reliable kit and exactly the kind of thing I hoped it would be.

Fantastic SDR, toss the included USB cable and add a couple of heat sinks.
8/30/2026 It seems like everytime I do something to improve reception, the SDR module starts running hot until I perform the next heatsink expansion. I got tired of monkeying around with heat sinks, especially when they prevent me from plugging a keyboard into the Pi 4. My newest solution was to remove the passive heat sinks on two sides and add a Easycargo USB Fan Heatsink Peltier Module Kit, 40mm USB Fan Heatsink. Now the SDR module is cold to the touch. Overkill? Sure. But it was worth the price. I can't imaging allowing the SDR to run hot to the touch to be good for it's long term performance. 8/22/2026 I found that the radio is working without a problem and running much cooler after tossing the USB cable and directly connecting it to the Raspberry Pi 4. Further, without moving the antenna, my reception range has noticeably improved and I'm seeing a lot more planes, especially the smaller ones that frequent the area. At this point, I'm satisfied that I've got things set up about as best as I can hope without drilling holes into the wall of my house, so unless something changes, I'm upping this review to 5 stars and likely won't provide any more updates. 8/19/2026 I grew frustrated with the unit and eliminated the 3 foot USB cable, that came with it in the box, and plugged the SDR directly into the Pi 4B. I am now receiving signals from farther way and the SDR is running much cooler. 8/17/2026 Heat is absolutely an issue. I'm in FL and the radio is in a room that is not properly air conditioined. I've been forced to add more heat sinks and an external fan to keep it running cool enough to stay online. I may end up getting one of those $10 bithermal chips to force the issue. Unfortunately I can't relocate the radio to a better environment because the antenna needs height and open space. 8/16/2026 First, let me start out by saying that I have not found anything that I would say competes with this software controlled radio. It's flexible, easy to use, has broad support, and falls my important "under $75" range. It's been working for me for over a week as an ADS receiver (flight tracking) and, for the most part, it's doing a fantastic job. However, after the first 3 days of full-time use, it began dropping offline 16 to 28 hours because the receiver was overheating and dropping the connection. That surprised me because it was not hot, and at best I'd call it "moderately warm to the touch". I added 8 heat sinks that were destined for some soon-to-arrive Raspberry Pis which keeps it barely warm to the touch. After that, it's been working flawlessly. I may add a few more heat sinks just because I'm overly cautious. I'll add to this review in a few weeks.

It works perfectly, it's easy to use.
I bought this module for my daughter's school project without knowing much about it. After finishing the project, I kept it for myself and it's really fun to use. It's allowed me to learn a lot about radio reception. It works perfectly, zero problems, very easy to use. 100% recommended.

Very Disappointed
The bundle comes with a little card with a QR code linking to their website. From there, software and driver installations accomplished as directed. There is no specific reference to which application is recommended for the PC side of the process, but some are referenced as compatible, such as SDRSharp and SDR++. Several hours of fiddling with either of those and I have finally been able to get the device to play broadcast FM radio stations. That is the only radio service that is discernable. All other bands come across as nothing more than a digital sound similar to FT8 regardless of whether selecting WFM, NFM, AM, USB, LSB, DSB, CW, RAW. Nothing actually is working except common broadcast FM radio stations. There is virtually zero documentation on how to set up, configure or use SDR++ with this. SDRSharp does not recognize it at all. Overall, I am quite disappointed with this purchase and will be looking elsewhere.

Great FM radio for your computer but then 'meh'.
I'm going to leave 3 stars on this product. Now, as a newbie to SDR, this may or may not be fair to the product but this is my experience. I was able to download both the CubicSDR program included in the email from the seller as well as the SDR# program, which I like better although it was a bit more intensive to get operational. Maybe it's my lack of knowledge and research but I was expecting more from this product. I love the fact you can actually 'see' the signals and dial in on them very accurately with the SDR programs but, basically, I paid $30 for an FM radio since that's pretty much all I can get, even on my longwire antenna. I was expecting some MW, SW and ham accessibility but that doesn't seem to be possible without hacks or upconverters. Regardless, it's fun to play with for awhile but then I resort back to my PL-880 for anything other than FM broadcasts. Looks like I still have some research to do in order to get the most out of this product.

Advanced RF Analyzer Tool & Radio Receiver Device at Ridiculous Price. Engineer's Dream.
These work great for RTL-SDR use. Plus they give you a pack of 3 Various antennas. NooElec also sends you an Email link on how to setup this SDR up in Windows. For the price, these are just incredible to mess around with for looking at the RF spectrum or to check signal levels For Your New Scanner Antenna! You should also buy a (SMA male to F female adapter ) to hook up to some RG6 cable for an outdoor antenna setup for less interference (noise floor) from your computer, etc. Very revealing, to see just how good/bad a signal comes in to you and how high the noise floor level floats underneath. You could spend thousands and get a high end device to do that too, but this SDR (with the free software) will give you nearly that accuracy for $25. I have at least one running all the time and after an hour or so, there is No Drift whatsoever! I'm locked on a P-25 control channel and the carrier peaks exactly on frequency and just stays there all day. It has no drift. You can't ask for better specs. It receives radio signals from about the CB band (27Mhz) to about 1.7Ghz. Great for radio type "pirate experiments" too. You can hear and examine any signal you point it at, but it will only decode audio on Analog signals with the standard software. Digital P-25, etc signals will just be heard as noise bursts. For these digital signals P-25/trunking you'll need two of these SDR units and other software and yet more advanced computer skills. You can also use it to look at FM radio broadcast signals, and RDS data too. You can hear those as well. I also have the NESDR mini 2, but this is the better package deal. The case gets warm but it does not block another USB port, so this thing was well thought out. It is not a toy. NooElec gets my 5 stars vote for an Incredible Radio Receiver Device that really delivers the goods as a full fledged advanced RF Analyzer Tool with a low price. They don't know how Great it really is. I have wanted this particular device in my possession for 40 years. Great product, NooElec!

Good radio receiver
I use the RTL-SDR with home assistant to monitor the radio signal from my kerosene tank level sensor and also use it with an old British Gas electricity meter clamp to measure the house electricity consumption. It took a bit of figuring out but works flawlessly now using RTL_433 in home assistant. The RTL-SDR I a great little piece of kit and you can use it to receive all sorts of radio signals. If you use RTL_433 discovery in home assistant you will no doubt see all sorts of radio signals around you, including the tyre pressure monitors of cars driving past! It is slightly larger in size than a normal usb dongle and comes with a selection of different aerials to use with it. It is well made and sturdy in what I guess is aluminium. I’d recommend this to anyone if they are interested in projects like mine.

Das Aluminiumgehäuse fühlt sich robust an, und die SMA-Anschlüsse sind sauber verarbeitet. Die beigelegten Antennen sind solide, aber für optimale Ergebnisse empfiehlt sich unter Umständen eine externe, höherwertige Antenne. Leistung & Betrieb Der SDR deckt ein breites Frequenzspektrum von 100 kHz bis 1,75 GHz ab und ermöglicht so den Empfang verschiedenster Signale. Der 0,5 PPM TCXO sorgt für eine stabile Frequenzhaltung, was besonders bei schmalbandigen Signalen wichtig ist. Im Dauerbetrieb wird das Gerät allerdings spürbar warm, was Fragen zur Langzeithaltbarkeit aufwirft. Seit Oktober 2024 läuft es bei mir jedoch rund um die Uhr (24/7) ohne Probleme. Fazit Der Nooelec RTL-SDR v5 ist ein leistungsstarker und gut verarbeiteter Software Defined Radio mit einem großen Frequenzbereich und stabiler Frequenzhaltung. Die hochwertige Verarbeitung überzeugt, allerdings bleibt abzuwarten, wie sich die Wärmeentwicklung auf die Lebensdauer auswirkt. Bisher zeigt er sich im Dauerbetrieb jedoch zuverlässig.
