Good Start to a series
I really enjoyed this. I found it quite a light-hearted read and not too serious. I liked the way the main character kept explaining why they carried doing potentially suicidal and stupid things - it made it more believable. Having made use of duct tape on several occasions for unusual purposes (Trying to attach an oil soaked rag to a branch to make a torch for one) I'm not entirely sure you'd get away with the way it's used here - but hey it's fiction and it's fun.The main plot premise is a nice mixture of fairy tales and science fiction. I'm personally quite fond of re-imaginings of how old myths and legends could have been different so this appealed to me. I also felt that the hints about what had happened in the past were just tantalising enough. You can make a pretty good guess as to what's gone on, but you're not quite sure you're right. At the end of the book the author asks for reviews to be posted to let her know if we'd like to see another book in the series. From myself the answer is a resounding 'yes please'.

Fun with interesting angle
I've enjoyed Buroker's steam punk novels and this new fantasy book with a modern world trio of characters teases the reader. It gradually introduces the supernatural element but keeps part of the mystery through the novel's last page. Lindsay Buroker will have to write the next installment to this series to answer some of the questions remaining at the end - that's the not so subtle hint for her to continue the series! Her writing has great humour, she creates likeable, real to life and unusual females leads. She will need to work hard to produce as sexy and attractive a man as Sicarius (from her Emperor's Edge series) but I'm hoping she does it.On the whole, editing and proof reading are very good, with just a couple of typos (so much better than many books in this category of ebook). Hope it won't be too long before book two is published..

not my taste I'm afraid
First off, I want to say that just because it isn't my taste doesn't mean that other people won't love it. The writing was certainly very competent and smooth, the action moved along nicely, and there was plenty of plot.I just didn't like the characters much. Temi never seemed to develop a personality, the main character let herself get manipulated all the time by Simon, and, well, Simon was so irritating that I nearly stopped reading several times. Some of the other reviews seem to really enjoy the wit, banter and interplay between the three leads. Me? I just wanted the monster to rip Simon's head off, preferably after uploading a virus to his phone, tablet and blog. His stupidities are too numerous to count, but they include idiotically pursuing photos while risking his own and his friends' lives, quipping ridiculously while in extreme peril (they all did that), and wearing inappropriate footwear while hunting a murderous monster while completely unarmed. The Trekkie references also got old fast. Very fast. So did the blog.As someone who got all the Trekkie references, I have to say that computer nerd+Trekkie+sidekick banter= an excess of cliche.Having read the Flash Gold series I was expecting more.... reasonable, un-social-media obsessed characters.Sorry to seem so critical. Most of this review has been because I disliked one character (intensely) and couldn't understand why anyone would act as his partner - or put up with his idiotic behaviour. It soured the whole book for me, to such an extent that I couldn't enjoy the rest of the plot, characters or world. So perhaps you should just dismiss this review as biased!

Another great book from Lindsay Buroker
I wasn't sure when I bought this book if I'd enjoy it as it is the first book based in a modern setting however I should never of doubted Miss Buroker's story telling skills.. I have read it twice so far to make sure I haven't missed any of the nuances/interplay between the characters. There is some very funny episodes as well as thrilling scarey ones when you wonder who is it that is attacking people .(not really a spoiler as the first body is found in the first chapter.)As always Lindsay Buroker has painted the settings using great descriptions and has you guessing where her heroes may go next. I loved the interaction between the characters and am looking forward to Book 2 in the series - hope I don't have to wait too long.

Funny and great work!
I really enjoyed this book! This is my first to purchase from unknown authoress but I'm glad I did! I found it to be fun, delightful and packed with action. I found that the story behind the 'mysterious people' among others to be really great, plus the new remix of fairy tales and science fiction. I liked that the main character wasn't the chosen one, different from other typical books of the main character as the chosen one and all. Which is great cos it makes it more interesting this way, and plus the way she took leadership without realising it and she's envious of Temis! I think its the other way around. Can't wait for the second book!!!

I'd have given this 3.5 I think, if I could. I love everything I've read of Lindsay's previously, but this one just didn't grab me the same. I'm going on to read the next one, because I do want to know what happens, but not with the same enthusiasm that I usually have.

Yet another great read from Lindsay
This was such a fun read, as I find all of Lindsay's books. She is one author that you can guarantee will give you great characters you fall in love with and cheer for all the way to the end. After so much outer space and magical worlds it was a surprise to find this book had a contemporary setting. But never fear the mythical is never far away. Delia and Simon mesh perfectly as best friends and I enjoyed reading the two bounce off each other so much that I felt protective of their twosome (friendship) and felt Temi was going to get in the way. But Temi too is a well developed character and adds to the over all story. Really I think that anything could have happened in the story and I would've enjoyed it just as much as long as Delia and Simon were there. But plenty does happen and these two just keep getting themselves into trouble.

Great start to a new series
I stumbled onto Lindsay Buroker through some free ebooks a few years ago and she has rapidly become one of my favorite authors, I really look forward to any of her new releases. I purchased this one last night as soon as I saw that it was available and was finished a few hours later, and now I'm stuck again, waiting for another one to come out, its a vicious cycle :PI'm terrible at writing reviews, but I quite liked the book, so here goes-this book has lots of action and adventure. Del and her business partner Simon are 20-somethings: snarky, geeky, smart, and funny. While looking for archeological treasure in an abandoned mine shaft they find themselves in the middle of monsters, aliens, murder, and mayhem. Unlike Amaranthe from the Emperor's Edge books, I think Del would rather just get out of town and avoid the whole rampaging scary monster scene altogether, and is sort of dragged a bit reluctantly into adventure. She and Simon are joined by Temi, her childhood BFF, who is looking for a job and gets more than she bargained for. Lots of running around, chasing, fighting in caves and tunnels, run-ins with the monster and the mysterious biker dudes, mixed in with sitting around the laptop trying to find a decent wifi signal. Like Indiana Jones, with less archaeology, Del even has a bullwhip. For me Del and Simon made the book, I loved their snarky (but not annoyingly so) arguments and back and forth moments. They don't have magic powers or super warrior skills, but they're smart and think on their feet when trouble comes around. (they do tend to leap headfirst into trouble)This is not a romance (if that's what you are looking for) but there are hints that maybe in the future there might be, its very much an action adventure, with humor and paranormal/fantasy aspects. The characters seem like real people, not forced or unnatural, like people you'd want to hang out with. There are quite a few loose ends once the dust settles. Its not a cliffhanger by any means, there is an ending, but it definitely leaves room for more to come.as always, very well-written, with no grammar or spelling errors (that I noticed) to take the reader out of the story. Approximately 3500 locations on kindle.

Weird but still fascinating
When I bought this book I was expecting some more "steampunk" story and I was disappointed not to find one.Still, the book is well written and has all the irony, adventure and "mistery" I've come to expect from Lindsay Buroker.I did enjoy the book, even if it left me with the weird feeling that there should have been something more in it.Anyway, I did enjoy the book and I do look forward to book 2 in the series.

Torrent - Rust and Relics
I write this recension in two languages. In English and in my far better German. As the books before I read from this author (All the books and novels of the Emperor Edge series) his new novel was absolutely exciting, suspence packed. I only interupted to read it while I had to sleep, to work and were busy with other inevitable duties. The author was not mean enough to end with a cliffhanger, but he leaves opern more questions than answers and I hope, he will write a sequel, or better a couple of sequels. For this low price - I paid far less than one Euro - it was a present. I would pay far more for it.So I can recomend all poeple, who like to read SF, Steampunk and Fantasy, to read this book - and the Emperors Edge books.Torrent - after finishing it - I can't tell - was ist a science fiction novel or an urban fantasy`? I am not certain. I hope Lindsay Buroker will illuminate me.----So, nun die deutsche Bewertung. Wolf
