Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible

So much I had not seen.
I have just read Goldingay's fascinating commentary on Ezekiel. I thought it was outstanding. His explanations of the most challenging parts of the book for many readers - the visions of the temple and land towards the end - were exceptionally helpful. He made many things clear and opened my eyes to much that I had not seen.

Excellent guide for initial study
Others have already reviewed this magnificent volume fully. I find it very helpful for an initial assessment of what each bible passage is essentially about as well as giving necessary background details. No one volume commentary can really be adequate for extensive study but it is a good starting point. I also have the Oxford single volume commentary and for me, possibly reflecting my own theological stance, I prefer this one.Index included and a little on New Testament Apocryphal writings which I find intriguing.

All in one commentary
This was recommended by my lecturer for study after my bible course, full of critique, useful information and all in one volume.

Not as good as it thinks it is.
An an evangelical christian I find the tone of this commentary irritating and often unhelpful in throwing light on a passage. For instance on I Cor 11 I sought insight but found a mush of views that seemed to try and set the controversial passage in such a context as to avoid dealing with the topic. And occasionally I find blatantly controversial statements without qualification. Eg “Esther purports to be recounting real events but it is historicised fiction”. Yet the ESV intro considers Esther historical so this is a controversial statement stated as obvious fact. Overall I find the tone of this commentary smug, overly confident in its ever so scholarly modern outlook. Buy another.

This is the best commentary for either layman, early student, or for quick reference in my opinion
I recommend this to everyone wanting a deeper understanding of the Scriptures without drilling down into controversies or getting lost in the minutia. It is extremely conprehensive for a single volume commentary. Its useful for both scholars and general readers do to its clear, but not simplistic language. This and the New Bible Commentary are the best single volume commentaries available. It has really good scholarship and it helps accessing bible scholarship without needing to know original languages. The intro essays are particularly helpful if you want a refresher on the overview of each book.I recommend this and have bought it as a gift to new learners.

Relatively theologically neutral commentary
I enjoy the commentary, it is quite neutral in its doctrine, leaning a tiny bit towards evangelicalism on some things but nothing extremely evident. Controversial passages such as Matthew 16:18 are treated with upmost care, for example, any mention of Peter being or not being the first pope is cleverly adverted, nor discussion of whether Peter is the 'little rock' whilst Jesus being the 'giant rock' is also not mentioned.I don't like that there is really no clear indication of which verse is being discussed, for example, there will be a header like Luke 1:1-34, and there is just paragraph after paragraph discussing the passage but you can't really tell exactly which verse are they refering to in each comment, sometimes its indicated, mostly it is not, that makes it very hard to search for commentary on a specific verse, you have to read the whole thing an infer when they are describing the verse you want.It is not a hardcore historical-critical method commentary, but it does have some comentary to certain sections in which they raise the question about the divinity or accuracy of certain passages, something I do not like.

Better than Expected
Just a Short Note: This one-volume commentary on the Bible is much better than I expected. Having read, used, and owned many one-volume commentaries, I find this is more thorough and balanced than most. I would rank this in the top 3 of all one-volume Bible commentaries behind IVP's New Bible Commentary (21st Century Edition) by eds. Gordon Wenhem, J. Alec Motyer, D.A. Carson, and R.T. France and tied with The Baker Illustrated Bible Commentary by eds. Gary Burge and Andrew Hill (Baker being a little more accessible to the general reader). I would also suggest pairing this up with Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible for a complete resource.Rev. Prescott Jay Erwin, ThM
