Wear comfortable shoes and look the part
They look very good with a pair of black leather shoes. We did a ton of walking at the Renaissance Festival so I was glad I could wear some comfortable shoes. I ended up cutting the bottom straps, it looks fine without them. I also used velcro straps to keep them tight around my legs near the top and did not have any trouble with them after walking around all day. These were also some of the cheapest ones I could find on Amazon that looked good.

Decent Fake Leather Pirate Shoe Cover at affordable price
I received these Forum Novelties Buccaneer Deluxe Boot Tops today, 15 October 2024. I had read most of the reviews and know that these were going to be an affordable but imperfect solution to create the illusion of wearing pirate boots for my pirate costume.I am pleased with the product for the price I payed (about CAD $22 plus tax). I would have to pay at least CAD $75 or more for a complete PU boot, so I saved over CAD $50 by buying this PU product instead.I am 5' 8.5" tall. These boot covers go to just above the top of my kneecaps. They won't stay up on their own so I purchased an elasticized strap to put under the top flap to hold them up as someone suggested. I could have used a shoelace to do so but decided to try the elastic first. I think elastic will do the job; if not the shoelaces are readily available.I like the look of the boot covers; they look like real leather. I can only tell they are not leather by looking at the underside to see that they are made of PU or other man-made material. The upper part above my shoe does show some folds if I allow them to drop down; a few folds don't bother me at all, but I don't want my fancy boots to be down at my ankle. The elastic bands should keep them at the height where I want them.Putting on the Ritz: As some others have stated, it seems easier to put my shoes inside the boot covers before putting the boot covers and shoes on my feet. I have to stretch the two elastic bands at the bottom of the boot cover quite a bit to make them fit over my size 10.5 shoe. It is much easier to do that before putting the boost and shoes on than to try to put the shoe on after pulling the boot covers up my legs. I fear that I would damage the two straps and break them if I did so, or worse tear the PU material. So I don't.I will do as someone else suggested to use some strong black thread (cord perhaps) to reinforce the two elastic straps attachments at the bottom of the boot covers. They do not appear to be well attached; only 1 thread line is seen. I looked at the thread used to attach the two gold buttons; they seem to be well attached. I might augment that with strong black thread.Highly recommended if you want to save some $$$ by using boot covers instead of buying complete boots.

Reasonable for the price
I have worn these in a stage show that I'm performing in and they have so far held up perfectly through 3 shows with 5 to go. If something changes I'll come back and change the review.I was pleasantly surprised that they fit me as I have rather thick calves. So while they are a tad tight, they actually worked well for me. I also have longer legs so they do go to my knee, but I push them down a touch to get that pirate boot rumple. The elastics are a bit too tight for my size 12 feet though and one snapped, but i find I don't really need the elastics. That's why I docked it a star. All in all I think they are worth the money and quite pleased.

With just a little work, you can turn these pirate boot covers into a first-rate pirate costume accessory.
My experience with these pirate boot covers started out poorly, since my initial order was apparently lost in the mail and were never delivered. Amazon was great as far as refunding my money. I re-ordered them (of course the price had risen by then) and they arrived on schedule this time. The vinyl material these are made out of is very heavy-duty and does a good job of resembling black leather. As others have stated, there are two elastic straps on the bottom that are supposedly to keep the bottom down over your shoe. These straps are way too small to fit over my shoe (which is only size 8 1/2). The brass decorative buttons on the outside of each boot cover are only attached with two strands of weak thread. I can see why people say these break off easily. With a bit of sewing and corrective engineering, I was able to correct these shortcomings and end up with a great looking pair of pirate boots. I've attached photos of my modifications. For reference, these pirate boot covers measure 22 inches from top to bottom, are 9 inches wide at the top and about 6 1/2 inches wide at the bottom. First of all, I reinforced all the brass buttons by sewing them securely on with heavy duty black thread. These babies are on to stay now. Next, I cut off the elastic band that was toward the front of the shoe. This was unneeded and I used the resultant piece of elastic to lengthen the rear elastic band (which is positioned to go right in front of the heel). For the rear elastic band, I cut through the band where it attaches to the outside side of the boot cover and then lengthened the band by sewing on the extra piece obtained above. I overlapped the two pieces by about 1/2 inch and just sewed around the overlap segment with the heavy duty black thread giving a strong joint. Since the original stitching on the attachment of the rear band to the inside side of the boot cover did not look too sturdy, I reinforced this attachment point using heavy duty black thread. I next installed a metal snap fastener button on the outside end of the rear strap and the receiving snap stud on the outside of the lower boot cover (see photos). These are very easy to install if you buy a basic snap fastener kit Lord & Hodge 1100 Snap Fastener Kit. To put on your pirate boot covers, first slide the covers up over you legs then put on and tie your black dress shoes (or any black shoes that have heels on them - you need the heels to get the full pirate effect). Now pull the boot covers down over the top of your shoes, bring the elastic strap around the bottom of your shoe just in front of the heel, and snap it into place on the opposite side. The top of the boot covers are normally folded over. Unfold them and tie a shoelace around each boot cover just below your knee. Make this as snug as is comfortable. This will hold the top of the boot cover up above your calf. Now fold the top of the boot cover back down so that it hides the shoelace and gives that special pirate look. You are now ready to say Arrrrgh!
