Shockingly good
I came across HM Clarke via a group recommendation and figured Id read it as a way to pass the time. Oh my hat! Its so much more than you expect! I adore Ryn and cant wait to see where she and Dagan end up! If there isnt a love twist somewhere I will be very disappointed!

Poor editing and pacing
Interesting premise but deducting stars because of several issues.1. Poor editing - typos, grammatical errors and sentence construction. I understand this is probably not the author's fault because they are supposed to have someone else do the editing but I often found myself having to re-read sentences and that made it less enjoyable.2. Pacing - it SEEMS fast paced because there's so much happening but after reading 3 books in the series the overall story line barely moves an inch. By the end of book 2 we still know precious little about Dagan and all we get in book 3 are crumbs. It comes across as though the author is trying to spread it out over as many books as possible and just makes me feel like I'm being taken for a ride. If it is truly going to be a 4 book series then the last book will probably be overstuffed (if there's even enough content for that). With some decent editing, books 1 to 3 could have probably been condensed into one book. It's one thing to hook readers in with suspense but you still need to make reasonable plot progress in each book for it to feel like all the action scenes aren't just filler. (See Kenley Davidson's Legends of Abreia (books 1&2) for an excellent (and clean) example of this)Tone - this might just be my preference but it reads as though it's meant for a much younger audience even though we know it's not because of the descriptive fight scenes. Might also be related to the aforementioned poor editing.Overall, there's lots of potential and I hope the author gets the support that they need to give the readers the expected quality. I will not be continuing past Book 3

Good but stilted
This is an alright start for a series but it doesn't flow very well. Lots of hurry up and wait, going on. The characters seem likeable enough. A lot of hints of Ryn being "touched by destiny" or some similar trope. Interested to know how she came to be friends with the crow. Hopefully that part of the next one.

Applies to Blackwatch Chronicles 1-3 incl this one - Proven
I enjoyed the books especially after reading a number of sci fi, before dipping back into fantasy.Loved the concept of the pair, and how they met up. Cheerfully read the first book and followed straight away with 2 and three. Easy to read. Very occasional wrong word or wrong spelling.Male and female warriors/wizards felt very equal to start with, but became a little traditional roles as time went on.Well worth a read, and I will definitely follow with book 4 when available.

Another wonderful thrilling 1st book, in a series, from this talented author

Good start to the series
A good solid start to this series. More world building would be good but the main characters are likeable, the story well paced with plenty of action. I'll be looking forward to the next installment.

Exciting read
I loved this book. It's about a group of young trainees who want to join the Blackwatch, a police force, and protect their people. They are almost immediately thrown into the deep end when Ryn, a new recruit, is paired with an outsider. Excitement, action and mystery runs rampant throughout this alternative world where warriors and magic users try to root out the corruption at the top of their society.
