A group of friends think they found the perfect easy score - an empty house with a safe full of *. But when the elderly couple that lives there comes home early, the tables are suddenly turned. Is there a Doctor in the house?
It was great to see ex ‘Doctor Who’ actor Sylvester McCoy in a role where he could really let loose and have some fun … of sorts! If you like psychological horror and gore, then this film is for you. If you’re squeamish or easily shocked then don’t watch it: you have been warned!! I’m not normally a fan of gory horror, but when I heard how the whole cast really enjoyed themselves making the film, I was intrigued. The Owners is based on the graphic novel ‘Une Nuit de Pleine lune’ by Hermann and Yves H. and this significantly pre-dates the other film(s) that this one has been compared to by some people. So, if there is any plagiarism, it’s the makers of the other films that may be at fault for copying aspects of this story. I haven’t seen any of those other films so I did not have a clue as to what might have been coming next … and the surprises are half of the ‘fun’.The basic plot: Sylvester McCoy and Rita Tushingham play an elderly couple (Doctor Huggins and his wife Ellen, who appears to be affected by dementia or something like that) who come home to find a gang of three young thugs (Gaz, Terry and Nathan) waiting for them. Nathan’s girlfriend Mary (played by Maisie Williams, Game of Thrones, New Mutants etc) is there as an unwilling accomplice because the lads have ‘borrowed’ her car to use as their getaway vehicle and she can’t get to work without it.The thugs set upon the elderly couple to get the combination of their safe out of them and you initially feel sorry for them … but then you begin to realise that the sweet old couple might not be quite as innocent as they first seemed. As the threats and violence escalate, Mary finds that she may be the only sane person left alive in the house! There are plenty of twists and shocks to keep you guessing as to what might happen next, with more than a few ‘WTF?’ moments. There is also a fair bit of blood and the violence is brutal and even shocking at times, but the real horror is what apparently ‘normal’ human beings seem to be willing to do to each other. Thanks to the delightfully OTT performances by the older cast members, you may not be quite sure who you want to root for as the body count rises. In an interview, McCoy described The Owners as ‘a sweet love story of horror and mayhem’ - and the twisted and demented love story between the otherwise apparently normal elderly couple is indeed what makes this film different!

Entertaining
I feel that four stars would be a little too much praise but for horror fans - especially those that enjoy home invasion movies - this is an enjoyable fare. It reminds me of the old school horror movies we used to get in the 80s and 90s and has a lot of dark humor to it. It's not for the squeamish though.Sylvester McCoy is an absolute delight in this role and Maisie Williams is yet again very impressive, post-Game of Thrones. Yes, the movie might feel a bit dumb to some people but if you grew up watching these types of movies, you will enjoy it.There are people reviewing this saying 'worst movie ever', etc - they clearly haven't watched that many movies. I'm not sure what they expected from a movie of this premise. For me, this is an ideal movie to sit down with a few beers on a Friday night if you want to watch a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously

Well-crafted home invasion movie - even if you do guess the twist
Quite enjoyed this.As soon as we're introduced to the bunch of ne'er do wells, we know there will be some serious brutality ahead. How it all pans out though may surprise you.Was great to see Sylvester McCoy in a nuanced and complex role and Maisie Williams is always a joy. But it was veteran actress Rita Tushingham who steals the show, with her stunning shift from a helpless old lady to a very scary woman! She provides a couple of moments of black humour too - watch out for the flying dentures and the kiss on the bottom!Whilst I more or less guessed the twist quite early on, this movie still kept me entertained for 90 minutes.Well worth a look.

Home Invasion
A home invasion goes wrong when thieves break into an elderly couple's home hoping for easy money only to find the tables turned against them. Very cheap, very low budget British horror with Maisie Williams and former Doctor Who Sylvester McCoy making it worth watching with otherwise bland performances. Very difficult to feel sympathy for the so called heroes in films like these who you can't help feel deserve everything they got and more.

A bit 50/50
This is a bit of a weird film. It started off pretty good with some decent tension but the tension became somewhat diffused in the second half. The feeling of threat became quite weak and changing to a 4:3 aspect ratio (presumably to give a feeling of claustrophobia) did not really help. All that aside though I actually did quite like it, the performances were good and it was solidly done but the second half did not live up to the promise of the first half.

Good little horror movie
Well made and quite suspenseful. It doesn't hold any major surprises plot wise if you're a horror film veteran but it's certainly worth a viewing. The star of the show is veteran actor Sylvester McCoy who shines as a superbly creepy doctor (not that one!).

Worst movie I’ve ever seen in 40 years. Waste of time.
Terrible movie. They had hundreds of opportunities to get out but instead the actors just got paid to run around the house making stupid decisions eventually leading to an abysmal ending. Most undoubtedly the worst movie I’ve ever watched, I’m angered that it cost me £5 and 2 hours of my life which I’ll never get back. I even went as far as to bookmark the directors name so that I never watch any of this rubbish again.Don’t waste your time!
