Gift for woodcrafting husband - it was a HIT!!
This excellent kit is available from a number of vendors but Amazon Prime had the best price at about $38US cheaper than other vendors (in 2013). I'm very glad I got it, and got it from Amazon. The Dear Woodworker(TDW) really likes this kit: he appreciates that it is a kit & all pieces can be easily stored in the good-quality box. The blades are readily accessed during projects in the holder provided for them; multiple blade handles make it convenient to have a few blades set-up & ready to grab during projects; the strop provided is a good starter strop, not great but certainly good enough. The dvd is a nice feature since "I'm always open to the chance to learn something". The blades arrived with a nice edge which is easily maintained. The strop provided was used one or twice as a test & was a success, but TDW prefers his own strop to keep the blades in top sharpness. The provided strop should certainly be sufficient for the beginning carver until the next investment can be made. As chief nurse of the family I appreciated the not-so-subtle reminder of tool sharpness: the little packet of bandaids that came with the set! ;)

Made in USA
I have more expensive carving tools, and I like them better. But, I would say that for the money paying $150 for this many tools is a really good deal. Also, I like the fact that they all are made in the US and pretty sharp out the box too. I think a lot of people will like the instructions and the dvd included which helps explained things for beginners. I would buy the more expensive Pfeil tools, but I noticed they were not available. But, I am glad that I bought these tools instead. I think they are still really well made and are not a lot worse than the Pfeil tools. I would say the main difference is that the Pfeil tools are designed with more intricate angles and made for a higher standard of work. I would recommend these to anyone that is particularly not a professional artist. I think that even being one myself that they work really well, but I do linocuts and mostly make mono prints with a profession press. I think the biggest question should be what are you using these for. I would buy the Pfeil if I was making wood relief prints or carvings. I would not hesitate buying these if you are only using them for linocuts.

Best Purchase I've made in past few years
This is an amazing set of tools! I have Pfeil gouges, two cherries and I have the flexcut deluxe mallet set. I bought this set just to have as a travel set, (I bought the tool roll so I wouldn't have to carry it in the wood box). I didn't expect to love it like I do being a beginners set. Let me explain why... These tools are much thinner than your standard gouges. Which translates to them sharpening like razor blades. Even though my other tools are just as sharp they don't slice as well in hard wood because they get thicker sooner. Anytime I'm working with really hard wood from now on this is my go tool kit. I can ease off thin layers at a time but overall go through much faster and easier. I love this kit! These tools do flex as the name suggests. It's a little odd at first but you quickly forget about that. Like I said, I have the deluxe mallet set as well, but being intended for a mallet it doesn't flex very much. These flex with ease with every push. At first I thought it would be a problem, but the project I was working on was with an unreasonably hard batch of poplar. So I was just playing with my new stuff and quickly realized this set went through the wood faster than my very expensive Pfeil tools. And I do keep my tools razor sharp. Bottom line, this may be called a beginner set, but it is a very nice set for an experienced woodcarver. One of the best purchases I've ever made for my tool collection. I will definitely be checking out more of these Flexcut products. I started with the carvin' Jack six blade and then got the deluxe mallet set based on how well I liked how the carvin' jack held an edge. The mallets tools are just as impressive. Now this set has impressed me even more. YOU CAN NOT GO WRONG WITH THIS SET!

Flexcut Starter Carving Set
This set is a great starter set of tools for the beginning carver. They are very diverse in design affording great versitility for the new carver without investing in a wide selection of individual tools. The big drawback is that I am not a beginning carver and the tools are supplied as inserts to two supplied handles. (A palm handle and a handle that would be used with a mallet.) In order to have a bunch of tools out for a specific piece, you have to switch inserts into one handles to continue. I typically have 5 or 6 gouges on the bench, along with 2-3 knives, that I work with at a time and I will probably buy some additional Flexcut handles to make this set work well for me. The tools come very sharp (Respect this when changing inserts) and the kit provides everything a beginning carver would need. It is a great set.

Great set, especially for beginners
Great set, especially for beginners, which I was 2 years ago when I got this. It's a lot of "bang for the buck" when you're first starting and want an affordable variety of tools. Even now, with more experience, I use this set a lot, and although I've since bought other brands of gouges in additional sizes, I still use these regularly. I did end up buying a 2nd smaller handle (the larger wooden handle I find uncomfortable and clumsy to use) for efficiency, but swapping the tools in an out it no big deal. They stay secure in the handle and do not wobble at all. I also bought a Flexcut 19 slot tool roll for mobility - I found the box to be cumbersome and useless. I suppose it's fine if you only carve in one spot, but even so, the roll is more efficient. Haven't used the knife much as I have other knives I like more that Flexcut (the blades are thicker than I like and the handles are uncomfortable), but the gouges are great.

Nice Selection of tools and sizes.
Not a nubee to whittling and carving- I have quite a selection of veiners, gouges and skews. I looked all over the web at 'opinions' on flexcuts products- those that love them, really love em. Those that don't like em, don't...but also don't share any reasons why they don't. (I can speculate that they also already have many expensive tools- and don't see any reason to duplcate tools they enjoy). I have and use my tools- but I also like to try the new. I side with the first group- love em ! Really like the 'spring' the Flexcuts give. Many (Many) times- as I have worked with a standard gouge... they will dig right into an area you don't want to carve. The Flexcut's seem to be able to stop cutting a little quicker when you let off the 'flex' pressure. The tools come SHARP ! The quality of the tools steel is suprisingly great. They come SHARP ( o- I said that already) and are easly stropped into sharp again with just the supplys given in this packages assortment. It is a little funny to see the blades- they look like they are made from metal strapping- but, again- the tools steel quality is TOP Quality. Nice assortment of Blade styles and sizes. Both handles are also good quality. These are REAL Quality Tools that anyone will have and enjoy for a very long time. I find that I reach for these as often as my standard fixed handled carving tools... some times more so, for smaller more intricate cuts. Bonus points for the DVD. (Though I fell asleep for the middle of it- I really was tired)...cuz he really does show you all of the detail involved in a relief carving. Promiss I will watch it again.

Fearfully Sharp! Love It!
Being very new to carving I first purchased a craft set with some blunt gouges set in what appeared to be dowel rods which came with a piece of basswood iron ore. After trying to sharpen those items with every known sharpener to man, I went out and got a razor knife (lockblade box cutter) which was WAY better than the first junk, and ordered some nice basswood from a recommended supplier. Things got much better. So, I figured I would stretch out and purchase some real carving tools, seeing as I had made it through the prior experiences and still wanted to carve. First off, the box is "interesting." I was afraid at first that I would have to get a crowbar to get into it, but finally discovered that the "loose" piece of wood on one side actually slid out and opened the box to reveal the contents. Examining the contents I found the items inside to be VERY SHARP, unlike previously acquired tools. One of the main selling points for me was that it included the slip strop and dressing, giving me everything I needed to maintain its sharpness. One of the most interesting and certainly the most frightening aspects of this set is the little yellow box that was nestled underneath the blades. After lifting most of the blades and wrangling it free I found that it was a convenient bandaid dispenser. Yes, this set is so sharp you will need the convenience of being able to DISPENSE your bandaids right from the kit. I have very gently and carefully curled some chips from a block of wood (the remnants of the basswood iron ore mentioned earlier) a couple of times with ease, but have shelved this set until my slash-proof/gouge-proof safety glove comes in. I'm hoping to save on bandaids.

Do it! :)
New to carving and have regular access to a Wood Shop and tools. Needed something I could use at home. This is a GREAT starter set. Multiple blade options gives me versatility and the blades are REALLY sharp right out of the box (includes bandaids...LOL). Kinda a pain to change blades on the handles but in the grand scheme I can only use one at a time anyway and over time it's easier to insert and remove them...at first it was tough and I thought I might cut myself in the process. Put a little beeswax on the insertable end of the blade and now they glide in and out nice and easy. Would definitely buy again. (Pic is WIP.)

Metallurgy and Design at its Best!
Great set. Sharp knives. Sensible design. Metallurgy is tough, professional and sharp. A couple of more handles will reduce the bother of changing the blades often. Go for it! Jose
