The Garuda Purana
D**.
Extremely clear, nicely organized and uncompromising translation
A lot of notions exist about the nature of the content of this text; many negative. The authors have done a very good job at giving a consistent translation of the text without compromising on the content for the sake of universal acceptance, especially by those who have a skewed perception of Hinduism; Hindus included. A very important scripture of the Hindu tradition which describes aspects of reality that one cannot obtain from the other texts of the tradition. Reality seems to be infinite, in the qualities that one can perceive of it, and the study of texts that describe specific aspects of this reality in detail seems to be very valuable. This well written book allows one who is not fluent in Sanskrit to study the Garuda Purana.

Then real book of the damned.
First I want to say I can not really give accurate information on the translation of this purana as I have not been able to find other books containing this work. From the format and length I think It may be complete. Next this book has many grammer mistakes in it. It was not proof read very well. This book gives a account of mans path to hell. It is even more gruesome then Dante's inferno it reads more like a script from the movie hostel. In this book is the description of hell. After death the man is forced to walk some 800,000 miles to Yama's city. On the way he gets to be tortured continously. Starved to death. Beaten every few minutes with clubs hammers and all kinds of other neat weapons. Then you get your eyes peaked out by crows and snakes bit you all kinds of fun stuff. Until you get to the viatani river which is a nice little river thats filled with only blood and some type of pus. Also alligators and snakes(not where you wanna jet ski). Here you get beaten and thrown in. After being starved and dehydrated you can drink from this nasty mess then get sucked down a whirlpool. But its not over NOOO you then get to yamas city. Obviously after a few hundred years of walking. There you get tied to huge tree and beaten for a few more days. You also get other nice treatment like being crushed in a vice. Yes all this then you are sentenced to you specific hell where I guess this goes on for a while. You may ask what is it that can get you in this situation. My god this seems fit for only Hitler and Vlad Dracula. No no my friends along with the man who commites infaticide is the man who throws his waste into a cow pen huh The man who talks back to his teacher. Yes this fate could be yours for throwing your own crap into the crap of a cow. Basically anything under the sun can get you into hell basically every living soul is going to hell. BUT there is great news. You can be forgiven. NOT really by good deads or any of that crap NOOO but by giving gold and cows to good bramins yes there it is. The reason for this book scare the crap out of the person then have the bramin take you wealth to buy your way out of it. well you can be forgiven hell if you give a brahmin 1 cow while your alive but after death you have to give the brahmin 100,000 cows to be released. From this book basically even hitler could get out of hell by giving enough to brahmins. Well like the catholic church in the middle ages with there pentence this is basically the same thing. I thought this book was written in the time of the Gitas so I was horrified when I read it. But I later discovered in was written in the middle ages so that basically explains it. It was written in the heart of the Kali Yuga. It should be left there.

Pick another book. This one had heavy bias by the translators.
In the preface, they mention, “ sorting through the rubbish of the Hindu Puranas.” to validate a Christian idea of hell.... You can tell with that eye opening statement the mentality of the “translators” and where their bias will lead them to likely omit or add in information.I read the whole thing and was not enthusiastic about it. It really felt as if I were reading a Christian book about hell...It felt like a Christian person trying to validate their religion by using my religion. Near the very end, there was more of a Hindu tone but it was missing throughout the entire rest of the book. I would pass on this version and opt to read one that a Hindu wrote, someone immersed in the culture and can understand context and whose translation does not feel like an insult or manipulation.

Very Sacred Book
This is a sacred and holy book. Please treat with respect. Seek guidance from a Hindu priest before reading sacred books to avoid the sin of sacrilege.
