Q: Can this be put on with a paint roller. Need to apply to a 4 x 8 sheet of wood

This roller was a real disappointment. It dips in the middle and does not take the paint in that part. Others had said as much in their reviews, and I'm sorry to have not taken their advice.

Q: Will this help make the surface of my canvas smoother? Also interested in using on rocks as a base to make the surface a little less rough.

If you want a smooth base use a fine grain of sandpaper and sand in between layers of gesso. Apply a gesso layer, let dry, sand. Reapply a gesso layer, lightly sand, let dry...etc. I also vary the direction that I apply gesso. First layer is all horizontal, next layer is all vertical. If you want a rough surface try crushing egg shells (wash them first) and mixing them with the gesso.

Q: Is this Gesso nontoxic? Also, does it come in clear?

Golden Gesso doesn't come in clear, but Liquitex does make a clear gesso. I checked the technical sheet from Golden's website, it doesn't look like it's toxic since it's only acrylic resin, pigment and water.
