New syllabus
Envision/Savvas has sort of tried to redo the typical math syllabus at all levels. I teach math in grades 6-10, and, as usual, there are things that are good and things I disagree with. First and foremost is their emphasis on word problems to introduce the topic(they use the word "topic vs. chapter). They then use the same principle to show additional problems. This is a major stumbling block for those that are using the text on their own. Most teachers I see must extract the principle and present it in a simpler, more direct method. They also have a tendency to go out of their way to solve problems in a different way...seemingly to just be "different".An example: I don't know of a teacher that does not explain solving proportions by cross multiplying and solving for the variable. Savvas does something called creating equivalent expressions...one of the most needless and confusing ways I have ever seen.I have also noticed in their Alg I course the introduction of much more Alg II. You could see this as good or bad for the obvious reasons.Overall their syllabus is OK, but if given the choice, Savvas would not be my first choice.
