Normal People [DVD] [2020]

Great series
Contains the 12 episodes, some interviews about casting, Daisy & Paul's original casting session, an interview with Daisy and Paul about their experience making the series, and some deleted scenes. Other than the deleted scenes, I think I had seen most of this other stuff (or similar) on You Tube or elsewhere. There are actually more interesting interviews available on the net, including with Sally Rooney. So probably the only reason to buy this is to have it so you can watch the episodes whenever you like. Episode 5 is the best, by the way. Oh, the subtitles are useful for those of us not so familiar with Irish accents and slang, but I think you can get the same on Hulu with closed captions.

Beautiful heartfelt story with terrific acting
Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar Jones act in the title roles. In high school, one is smart, popular, raised in a loving household, but hides all feelings or hasn't found the words to express them with assurance. The other is smart, neither popular nor unpopular, raised in an abusive family, and is sharply critical of self and others.Through talking and sexual intimacies, they grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally, especially during their college years, coming together, breaking apart, but never breaking away, using Skype calls to soothe depression and other mental health issues and to fall asleep apart. There's a lot of alcohol, smoking, cursing, two characters' self violent acts, which are depicted off camera, and sex. The latter is tastefully done, except when one character asks for “the opposite” of hearing “I really like you,” and we see abuse manifested again, although off camera.Kudos to all those involved in the production, direction, photography, and other support of the film. Author Sally Rooney contrasts the lifestyles of the upper classes with those of low to mid income classes but bridges these gaps with the hard work, good nature, and genuine affection of the characters. One parent is integral to their relationship, and while their friends are flawed, they're mostly supportive. You will likely find the dialogue, acting, and quiet situations and scenery to be stunningly beautiful and heartfelt, and the story might remain with you as it has with me. I've watched this three times fully, and it's one of my favorite series. As some have noted, be aware that this is a region 2 DVD, not commonly played in the US. I'm looking for a non-regional player to no doubt watch this again. It was an original series and currently streams on another platform.

DO NOT BUY IN THE USA
This is another Amazon FUBAR: sold in the USA although it is incompatible with US players. The warning wasn’t added until the week of 10/12/2022.

Normal?
Please lord, no season two of this meandering, juvenile and overall colossal waste of Ms Edgar-Jones acting talent. Try "Where the Crawdads Sing" to experience her range of acting abilities. And "Connel," kindly go back to grade school.

Normal People.
This has to be one of the best series I have seen recently, one that I just couldn't binge and that's easy for me to do. Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar Jones showed us what friendship and love looks like over the years brilliantly. We feel everything they are experiencing, the many levels that a relationship can bring. I will be watching this again and soon.
