True to size, unless the child is heavy or overweight, then I would go to a size 6. Elastic waist, pull up shorts.

Q: Is Dark Navy like a dark blue color?

It was a little darker navy than I would have liked - almost black in some lighting, but still navy and therefore they are fine for my son's school.
