Amazing ice maker
I purchased the Danby ice maker after my previous machine of a different brand stopped working, it was an Improvements brand that lasted about 3 years, then would not go on, so it was time for a new one. Well, I own a Danby microwave, and was talking to a good friend who owns a Danby freezer and loves it, and he told me he has a Danby ice maker and loves that as well. So, I decided to try the Danby, well, let me tell you, I was expecting it in like 3 days or so, but the very next day I was mowing the lawn a a big Fedex truck pulls up and presto it's the ice maker already, and it was 90 degrees out so a perfect day to make ice. Well, I unpacked it, and followed the instructions, let it set upright, don't tip them or the oil in the compressor will move, so any ice machine should sit upright for at least 30 minutes before turning them on. So, i did the self clean cycle, you add white vinegar and water, then hold in the power button for 5 seconds, the ice maker will beep and the lights will be on letting you know it's self cleaning before use, then in a few minutes it goes back into stand by mode, and I unplugged it and held it straight and set it on my counter by the sink and opened the drain plug and drained it, then add plain water, and run the self clean again and drain that. Be careful when removing the drain cap as there is a tiny silicone rubber plug that is loose in the cap and it can fall out, so don't lose that rubber piece. They gave me an extra plug as a spare in a tiny plastic bag. So carefully replace the drain cap and you're ready to add water and make ice. Well, I'm really impressed because the old ice maker I had I paid a lot of money for it, and it made 3 sizes of ice cubes, they are not rectangular or square they are hollow round pieces of ice, but in the Danby they are 3 sizes of ice as well, where most machines I saw on Amazon only offer 2 sizes, small or large . This ice maker was very inexpensive, I believe I got it for $118 total, as opposed to most that were $150 and higher. This machine is very quiet, I can barely hear it when standing next to it, I have it on the kitchen counter, and the only noises i hear are when it cycles to drop ice into it's storage bin. It makes ice about every 6 to 8 minutes, and can make 26 pounds of it a day. When the ice bin is full it beeps 3 times, beep beep beep, then a red light goes on letting you know it's time to empty the ice, then close the lid and let it make another batch. I believe it makes 2 pounds of ice each time and you won't need to add water until the light goes on telling you the machine needs water, and it will pause and wait for you to put water in, and once you do, and close the lid it will resume making more ice until you're happy and turn it off. I just want to add that my Danby microwave is amazing, it's all stainless steel, and I've used it every day for almost 20 years, so I trust the Danby name for quality and durability. The ice maker has a plastic shell, it's not steel but it's lighter and wont rust like metal units can. The ice tray in the Danby is plastic so be careful with it or you can crack or break it, but all the other brands use plastic trays as well so just be careful when you empty it. They give you a plastic shovel to scoop ice out which is nice too. I'm very impressed with this Danby ice maker, and I know you'll be happy with it also, mine has been making ice for about a week, and it works perfectly and I'm sure it will keep going for years as long as I follow the owners manual instructions. I will do a vinegar self clean every so often because in hot muggy weather, and if they sit for a few days or weeks, it's possible to get mildew etc inside on the plastic, just like your refrigerator, so do a cleaning once in a while and you're good to go. Danby makes good products, and I'm impressed with mine.

Review of Danby DIM2500WDB Portable Ice Maker
Picking up the unit from my UPS Store mailbox, it was a bit of a handful. The boxed unit is about 26 pounds with no hand holds on the box, but it has plastic package straps that I used to lug it to my car.Unboxing the unit was straight forward, cut the straps, cut the tape, struggle to get the Styrofoam cocoon out of the box. The owners-manual is inside the unit along with the scoop. It’s important to understand to let the unit sit wherever its new home is for a half hour, DO NOT plug it in, just let it sit undisturbed for a half hour or so. Take that time to read over the owners-manuals important bits, like letting it sit for a half hour so the compressor oil can flow back to the compressor so the compressor doesn’t fail. Follow the instructions on cleaning the unit. I did a wipe down with a few paper towels dampened with some white vinegar and water and used 2 cups white vinegar and 2 cups tap water for the cleaning flush. After cleaning, you have to drain it which is a pain. Unplug the unit, spin it around and have a pitcher that can hold 4 cups of water ready and unscrew the cap and let the cleaning solution flow out. Now, I did have some water ‘spill out’ after that. I do not know where it came from and I’m wondering if it came from the upper labyrinth of the ice galley…or if the plastic cap and mating thread isn’t watertight. I put some Teflon tape on the drain spigot and replaced the cap and so far it hasn’t leaked. Follow the cleaning with the rising flush, I used 4 cups tap water for the rinsing flush and then drained that.I used distilled water for making ice these first few times to avoid mineralization issues long term in the ice gallery (that area where ice is actually made). My apartment was about 75F-80f with high humidity, the kind of temps that make a glass full of ice sweat badly. The ice produced is firm, but damp to wet. It could be how the ice is made, or the fact that my place is hot and humid. Putting the ice in the freezer to firm up works perfectly, but because of the ice being damp it can clump up and freeze in chunks. I suggest an ice maul more than an ice pick and an ice bucket.I did read all the Amazon Reviews for this product prior to buying it, both the glowing and the disparaging. I understand some are paid or compensated for their reviews, I am not one of those. I just live in an old building converted to cheap apartments and the fridge doesn’t have an ice maker, and I can take the heat with an icy beverage but simply can’t otherwise. I bought this unit at $99 because it hit a price I could afford, and I do suggest buying the extended warranty ‘just in case’. If anything bad happens to the unit I’ll update this review.>>>This is an update of my previous 5 star review. I have had this unit for a few days now, and it has an issue that is mirrored elsewhere, it leaks water. I can't tell where the water is coming from, or why its happening. I think there is either an overboard dump, an uninsulated part thats allowing moisture to collect (think cold glass forming sweat on a hot humid day), or an internal fitting with a poor interface. Its not a deal breaker for me, it makes ice. I just have to find a drip pan. It only appears to leak a few table spoons of water, the drain cap is on with some teflon tape and its dry....I really suspect its just something uninsulated thats chilled and allowing humidity to coalesce and puddle. For now, because the unit has poor bladder control, I have down graded it from 5 stars to 2.

Danby tabletop icemakers are the best! Makes ice fast and it is much smaller than past icemakers.
Important to make sure it sites for 30 minutes+ when first placing the icemaker after unboxing. It is really important to make sure it has the required space around the intake and outtake fans. With the smaller size it was much easier. Appreciate the cube sizes and the speed it makes ice. It is a little noising but we will take that over the type of issues we have had with other tabletops.

Great while it lasted
Lasted just under a year, then stopped making ice. This is the third portable ice maker we have owned. As one reviewer stated, we purchased this ice maker due to the great reviews both on and off Amazon. For the first 11 months, it functioned great. I did follow the instructions and ran cleaning cycle as recommended, but as with all these units they are made to break down at some point. This unit lasted the longest. I'll give 3 stars for it's consistency and lasting longer than others. What I'm most annoyed with is the company is not honoring the warranty. They implied that I need to take it to a professional to be repaired before they will do anything. For the price we paid, I'll just get another unit with the Amazon plan this time, since I know any of this units will stop working. One review I read stated that the majority of these are made by the same company with plastic parts. Now going into my 4th ice maker, I believe it. My recommendation is to purchase any unit that you like, but pay for the extended warranty. That is assuming the company will honor it! If this changes, I'll update my review.Update: Danby has honored the warranty and agrees to replace the unit.

Good machine, terrible customer service
The icemaker itself is fine, although loud. The reason I gave it 3 stars is that I had problems getting it to work when I first set up. I tried calling customer service, but after 20s minute waiting on hold, they hung up on me. This happened one more time, and then when I called back, it just hung up right away. Luckily, the issue I had resolved itself and the machine is now working, because customer service is terrible.

Noisy, frustrating machine...no longer works
Works ok, noisy and always beeping. I’m keeping it but wish I chose a different model. It’s January and it’s completely stopped working. Heats up instead of making ice. How can I return this defective ice maker?

Sturdy
I'm a big ice eater, so easy eating ice is a big deal. The ice is soft to eat but lovely and crunchy. The first couple batches that come down when you first start the machine will never be fully formed ice cubes as the machine needs to get cooling before proper ones form but the cubes that come down are still good. The ice is made quite quickly. Cleaning it is very simple. It does get some condensation underneath so we have it on a cookie sheet to keep water from dribbling all over the floor. But the cookie sheet isn't emptied every day or anything like that maybe once a week if it hasn't evaporated. All in all I love it how quickly it is made, the crunchability of the ice, and the texture. However if you are looking for crystal clear hard as rock ice this is not the machine for you.

Does what it says very very well.
I get heat stroke very easily and I cannot keep enough ice for ice water on hand during the muggy summer months. This does the trick and very well. First, I will say this unit it HUGE. It takes up half of my stove. It's no big loss because I usually only cook every other day when it's hot. But, be prepared nonetheless. It makes ice in about 10 minutes and every ten minutes after that. Put it this way; I put filtered water into it, turn it on, go onto make coffee, go to the bathroom and brush my teeth and when I get back, I have enough ice to make my morning smoothie. The great thing is that I have the machine going all day and I leave the ice there. When the bucket is full it beeps and stops. When the ice melts, the sensor goes off and it starts to make new ice. I come and go as I need to and refill with water a couple of times a day.Yes, this is an expensive gadget. Can you make ice cheaper, absolutely. But is it fantastic to be able to scoop ice out for 3 peoples smoothies and not get enraged that no one filled the ice trays for the hundredth time? Priceless.

Amazing Ice Machine
This Danby ice machine is our second ice maker. The speed of making ice is much quicker than our old unit and the ice stays frozen for at least 8 hours at room temperature. It is a bit larger and heavier than our old unit however that is no issue for us. Easy rear drain versus our old unit which had a drain plug on the bottom. As some other reviews mentioned, make sure the rubber plug is in the drain before screwing on the cap to prevent leaking. We received this unit about a month ago and use it almost every day. It has been working perfect!
