Where can one find/obtain instructions in English on how to safely clean and maintain the blade?

I don't know of any instructions. But a very light oil, what used to be called sewing machine oil would do just fine.When they used to sharpen these blades they put a vasoline type substance on the blade for protection after sharpening.

Anyone used this and big boy for backpacking? Which would you prefer? Thx for any help

Unless you are cutting stuff more than four inches in diameter the big boy is overkill. I have felled oak trees up to seven inches with this saw. In my rucksack the handle sticks out a bit. It will fit inside a backpack but then one has to dig it out. I also have the Silky F 180. It fits in the water bottle size pouch on the outside of my rucksack. It is perfect for toting around and I have cut Six inch oak but it takes a lot of time and effort. If one is going bushwacking the Zubat is the saw to rely on. Both saws cut like nothing else. You can't lose with either of these great saws.

An issue is made about the blade thickness of 1.4. Newer specs form Silky are 1.5. Any thoughts here?

My theory, which may be wrong, is that Japanese professionals prefer thinner blades because they require less energy to use. They remove less wood, produce less sawdust, and make more precise cuts. And since saws that cut only on the pull are what they're used to, they don't break blades like we do. So, to reduce complaints, returns, and customer dissatisfaction, a bit thicker blades are marketed to us because they know we'll end up breaking the blade. And... we love the marketing term "Professional", so ours are marked professional. Just guessing though. And I'll take the thicker blade too, I know how to operate a pull stroke saw... at least until I get too anxious toward the end of a cut. :-)

I love mine. I have the Silky pole saw too but sometimes it can't get into a tight place between two limbs and that's when I use this short saw.
