Powerlifting: Training, Techniques and Performance

As focused and concentrated as a perfect powerlift
This book is like having a virtual trainer. It is in three sections, with the first focusing on the three powerlifts, isolating the critical factors that apply to teach type of lift and all people. It goes through each of the three competition lifts in sequence - ie the squat, deadlift and bench-press - describing the biomechanics and the steps involved in a proficient, safe lift. The author describes exactly what to do and more importantly, what to avoid. Furthermore, the book shows the stages of each lift with an abundance of helpful diagrams and excellent photographs; the man who demonstrates each powerlift is obviously very experienced at powerlifting, whilst the photographer captures the critical parts of each lift. I found these aspects of the book especially helpful, since most people can either take motion selfies or get a training partner to take photos, and then compare each lift to the stages described and demonstrated in the book. The author is a professional trainer who has coached powerlifters to international levels, but moreover, like any good trainer, knows how to communicate the mechanics of lifting. I find the book to be an essential supplement to coaching sessions; although my trainer repeatedly tells me most things in the book, it is hard to take notes when you are focusing on training. However, the scope of the book is wider than just the three powerlifts, as it contains other useful sections on coaching and competition. There is also a handy description of the different aids used in lifting, such as specialist clothing, straps and belts.I scanned a lot of books before choosing this one; the photos, diagrams and boxes emphasising the critical aspects of each lift stood out for me, making the book very useful as a reference and as a perpetual 'how to' manual on powerlifting. I have no doubt that I shall refer to it for years at least.
