Rabbits: A Novel

Interesting, adds some depth to Rabbits Podcast
I really enjoyed listening to the Rabbits podcast a few years back. It is a mockumentary, like most of Terry's audio work. This novel expands the Rabbits story and gives you more background, especially about the Gatewick Institute. I enjoyed the new characters and thought it was well-written and engaging. I'm giving 4 stars bc the ending was a little confusing, sudden and ambiguous. I didn't feel like it tied up enough about the *spoiler* Emily storyline. Granted, The ending of the podcast is a bit ambiguous, but I thought it was more satisfying than this book version. Would be interested to see if Terry were to add a second book to this series and expand the idea of the "Grey God" and the grey figures because I don't feel like this was explained enough in either this book or theIf you have never listened to the Rabbits podcast, I almost feel like its essential to go with this book (although it could be a good stand-alone). It just goes far more in depth about the "game."

One Crazy Ride
Full disclosure - I'm not into gaming and I've never listened to the Rabbits podcast. With all the hype about this book, I decided I needed to buy and read it. I'm glad I did. This book is a bit of a mind bender. Rabbits is a game unlike any other. I won't even try to explain the details because it's rather involved. The general gist is that something in the game has been altered and if it isn't corrected, it will cause the end of the world. K, the main character, and his friend Chloe are tasked with literally saving the world. It took me quite awhile to get through this book. It touches upon so many subjects (known and unknown) to me. At times, I would have to reread passages and would still end up wondering what the hell I just read. Certain parts dealing with things like quantum physics went right over my head. There were also plenty of times I found myself googling things like Steely Dan albums, Linklater films, the Fremont Troll and more. I truly enjoyed that. I learned some pretty cool stuff along the way on this read.At times, it did seem the narrative was a bit long winded and some pages could have been shaved off. The story itself was really intriguing and kept me turning the pages. I teetered between 3 and 4 stars but I loved the ending and that swayed me to 4.Definitely would recommend this book to others, especially those who like the idea of alternate realities, the influence of ley lines, etc. with a dose of pop culture thrown in the mix as well.

Not buying the 2nd book
This was an OK book for readers that liked the story line.I got the book as part of an effort to broaden my reading base.I put the book down quite a bit. I took me awhile to figure out why. The author does not do "show, don't tell". I had been looking for good examples of "show, don't tell". This book made me realize most of the authors I read employ the technique so well that I needed this book as an example of not doing it.There were several places in the book including one defining segment were the author switched between "god" mode and 3rd person, "so we told her this. She told her that". This significantly detracted from the story and the readability. So now I appreciate "show, don't tell" because I've an example of its absence.Maybe I will come back to this author some day. Writing the book was to the author's credit. Its something most people (myself included) haven't done. That said, I'll read something else.

A non stop rollercoaster ride of a book
Part mystery, part adventure, part sci-fi... All amazing. I couldn't put this book down, I needed to know what would happen next! Really enjoyed this book, I can't wait to explore more from this author. Thank you Terry Miles!

“So play, little human, keep playing the game.”
This was my most anticipated release of 2021 and I wasn't disappointed. I'm a big fan of all of Terry Miles' podcasts, so I was super happy when he announced that Rabbits would become a novel. I think fans of the podcast will be really happy with this — I was really scared it wouldn't leave up to my expectations, but I was wrong — because it has the same dark, mysterious atmosphere and it's equally addicting (and the easter eggs are delightful). Having said that, this novel stands alone and can be read by people who don't know the podcast. I'd recommend it to fans of The Matrix, Mr. Robot, Black Mirror, Utopia, Ready Player One, and anything related to conspiracy theories haha. This book is considered a "techno-thriller" and I can see that, as it read like a thriller at times with sci-fi elements—it was fast-paced and I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed Terry Miles' writing and will definitely read anything he publishes in the future. This is one of the most complex stories I've ever read and I'm equal parts fascinated and scared by Miles' brain, but that's nothing new, as I've been a fan of his since The Black Tapes.

“The first rule of Rabbits is…….”
You know what it’s like when you get totally immersed in a book? You enter into a private world, you hear nothing around you, you miss your stop on the bus, train or tube, nothing else matters. If such a book were to have that effect on you, it would be Rabbits.Game playing can be just as good; or bad. There are well documented cases of gamers playing for well over twenty four hours continuously and suffering the effects of sleep deprivation as a result. I have played some cracking games in my time and although reading is very much my thing, I completely understand how gaming can take over your every waking moment. When all is said and done; gaming can be akin to crack cocaine.K and his friend Chloe are playing Rabbits. Well, kind of. They know it’s risky, they know they shouldn’t have anything to do with it. And perhaps they could walk away if strange things didn’t keep happening. Coincidences that cannot be explained. Lost periods of time. Out of body experiences. One of the many beauties of this book is that the game itself is such an enigma. Are K and Chloe playing or are they caught up in a fantasy world of their own making? And if the game is real; what is it’s purpose? How do you win? Perhaps the more important question is: what are the consequences for losing?I was utterly absorbed from the first page. This is a lengthy book but the chapters flew by.Feeling brave? Up for the challenge?DO YOU WANT TO PLAY? 🐇 🐇

Makes you think
I liked this book, and was a little surprised that I liked it. I can't relate to gamers or conspiracy theories but it was very well written, the characters were likeable even though not in my demographic, and the story was interesting. There was a good pace, and it had some interesting ideas that make you stop and think. I already gave a copy to my 24yo son. I'll definitely read more by Terry Miles.
