Cluck Old Hen

play it for my chickens
Great old time blue grass music. I play it for my chickens while they are penned up. Took three songs from it for their play list, they seem to really be interested in the music. Some even sit down and relax! Laying lots of eggs instead of pecking on each other.

something to crow about
Loved it. We love old-time music and get a kick (cluck?) out of the many chicken songs. These were a pleasure and there are a couple we'll learn for jams.

Fun
I like old-time music and this collection has some genuine old recordings of chicken-themed songs. Fits my tastes perfectly. Some songs I had never heard before and some old favorites.

Fine Collection
A really well-thought out and put together collection of old 78 rpm songs relating to chickens. Good, clean audio, and a substantial booklet including round it out.

I needed it for a radio show about chicken songs
It had lots of them! they are not everyone's musical taste, so be warned. but if you need to do a radio show about chicken songs, a lot of your research is done

No "fowl play" with this wonderful CD - Great sound and graphics to crow about
This is the ninth release from the small independent North Carolina label - Old Hat Records - and every one of them is a winner. Between the wonderful transfers - virtually surface-noise free (except for some of the "dime store" 78s that have noise inherent in even minimally played copies) to beautiful - and clever package design (this one has a 20-page book of detailed liner notes and unique graphics)- I'd give this six stars if I could. The 24 "fowl" selections - all from 78rpm records made between 1926 (the dawn of electrical recording to 1940 -range from country to jug band to early gospel ("Chicken" by the Utica Institute Jubilee Singers) to blues. The only name you'll probably recognize is Gene Autry (yep!) who recorded "Stay Away From My Chicken House" FIVE years before he made his first western! The source discs - nearly all are ultra-rare - come from some of the best known 78rpm collectors in the country. There are sample tracks at the Oldhatrecords.com website if you want to hear the quality.Anyone interested old records or the original "roots" music need this album.I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.Steve Ramm"Anything Phonographic"

Something to spend your hard-earned buck-buck-bucks on
------------------------------------------------------------------------Various Artists"CLUCK OLD HEN: A BARNYARD SERENADE"(Old Hat Records, 2012)------------------------------------------------------------------------Here's something for the chicken lover in your life: a goofy, giddy, poultry-themed collection of Depression-era blues and old-timey music, with plenty of classic novelty numbers and a bunch of super-squeaky fiddles. This collection tilts a little more towards the hillbilly side of things, although there are tracks by bluesmen such as Peg Leg Howell and Casey Bill along with various jug bands, a touch of jazz and of course a slew of rural artists who didn't fall easily into any one category. There are a few stars -- Gene Autry, Cliff Carlisle, Riley Puckett -- but they are far outweighed by more obscure performers such as the Beale Street Sheiks, George Edgin's Corn Dodgers, Sweet Papa Stovepipe, the duo known as Mustard & Gravy, and most delightfully, the group vocals of the Utica Institute Jubilee Singers. This disc makes a great companion to Old Hat's sizzling "BARBEQUE ANY OLD TIME" collection, though this has a much higher proportion of animal-imitation tunes... Great stuff, of course! (Joe Sixpack)
