It traps liter.
This mat traps liter. We have more than 6 cats and more than 4 liter boxes in common areas and this mat helps traps the liter so well that when i vacuum the floors I have to use a hand attachment to suck up all the liter trapped in the carpet. Amazing! The hardwood floors we littered with cat liter far and wide but after this it has been contained to a very small space and is very manageable. I wish the mat came in multiple sizes though - I would like to place a very large mat under each liter box that would extend at least 2 feet from the box. I am very pleased with this purchase and will be buying more.
