Mel Bay Indispensable Scales, Exercises, and Etudes for the Developing Flutist

Like a lot of people out there, I’m working through this on my own. I love this resource. The scale practices are playful and engaging, and they mix up the patterns, so I always feel like I’m finding something new on each page for the scale practices.I went to the Mail site to see if they had audio recordings, and I was disappointed to see that that was not the case. I think it’s very helpful to have that auditory support of learning. I was able to find YT vids someone was kind enough to post the tracks for many of the studies.I wish the authors had included “how to use this book” instructions. I’m assuming it was written with the intent of students working with teachers, but we don’t all have that opportunity. I think I could get a lot more out of this with that guidance. However, I wouldn’t let that dissuade you from buying this book. It’s a wonderful resource, especially for people at the early intermediate stage. But those of us at that point could progress with more confidence if we had more clarity about what to practice in what order. It’s a bit like having a pantry and fridge full of wonderful ingredients, but no cookbook.

Great starter book..got me on the right track for playing flute scales in all keys! Enjoyed playing through some of the challenging melodious etudes!

I have many scale books and this is my favorite by far. Love the different patterns which make it so much more fun to do.

I use this music book for my flute lessons. It follows a logical sequence of scales, exercises and interesting etudes. Feels more like playing songs, than exercises.

My flute teacher loved this so much she is recommending it to her other students. The exercises are greatly enhancing my agility on the flute
