Good little hygrometer but for someone with not perfect vision it's a little tough to read you need a magnification

First of all, I was asked about the flavor of this item! It does not have one, fortunately. The instruction quality was a bit unclear, and it may or may not make a great gift. Giving one of these to a brewer might seem a bit like giving a wrench to a mechanic. I would make sure that this is something that they need first. If it is a novice brewer, then this would make a good gift, but make sure that you also include a plastic test cylinder! The device works, and gives a fairly good estimate on alcohol content. It is a good idea to buy two of these, because they feel breakable. Peace of mind is worth a few extra dollars. It is important to buy a test cylinder, and I prefer the ones made of plastic. This device has been a game changer in my kombucha brewing. Kombucha can have a wide range of alcohol content, so it is best to have a good estimate of the exact amount.

I bought this to replace a a damaged hydrometer. Price was good and the reading was spot on using distilled water for calibration. I noticed that the hydrometer readings for pre-fermentation wort differed from those I got using a refractometer. Not really a big deal, but I had to remind myself to add 0.004 to all my readings. That seemed to work ok, but recently I noticed that the 0.004 addition wasn't quite right. Rather than running multiple measurements against liquids with different specific gravities, it was easier to buy new ones and retire this one to the trash bin.
