Great genealogy book for finding native American sources.
I find that this book gives a great explanation for where to look for Native American ancestry. I highly recommend this book to all those who are interested in taking on this endeavor.

Great tips
Quick read with lots of links to researchers. Suellen has personal experience with how not to give up on dead ends, and which ones you should. I think the physiology of the American Indian is critical. I have three on the list and one was life threatening...esophageal asphlaxis, which was a shocking discovery right then and there as I read it and realized I have it along with shovel shaped incisive and strange blood antigens. Mine involve clotting factors possibly related to retro viruses from porcupine quills. Defiantly worth having on your shelf, especially if you are getting discouraged in your research.

A Keeper Reference Book
A how-to reference for researching Native American genealogy. Includes many on-line sources of indices, census/enumeration data, and explanations of these sources.Provides practical, worthwhile guidance and tips for conducting research. Almost 100% of the links are up-to-date. I borrowed the book using Kindle Unlimited but plan to purchase it for addition to my permanent reference collection. Very well written by a 30-year researcher into her own American Indian heritage.

Mixed feelings about the value of this book
I purchased this book because both my husband and I suspect we have native roots in our genealogy. The book does provide some useful links and I agree with the description of behaviors and characteristics of people that may reflect genetically inherited traits. Overall, the book most effectively describes the wide variety of reasons why most people will be unable to definitively confirm native ancestry. It would be misleading to think that the guidance in this book will uniformly result in success based on persistent exploration of information resources. More likely than not, most will hit hard roadblocks. Some parts of the book had laughable bits of information that should have been left out, such as the list of physical characteristics of Native Americans. The discussion of the significance of blood types was amateurish. Even simple editing errors within the book raised questions about its credibility. The recommendation to reach out for input from strangers on internet message boards seemed reckless at best. The historical information is offered at a superficial level -- useful for making the point that Native Americans and geographical boundaries moved about a great deal -- but also demonstrating that the author was not a serious student of Native American history at a deep level. Overall, the practical tips for exploration of genealogy were a minor, albeit useful part of the book. I was hoping for more but gained little from what I had already learned from my own explorations.

Lots of resources to go to for Free
I did not like the fact that most of this book is All about the Cherokee tribes.A few paragraphs about the other tribes, BUT ONLY OF THE FIVE CIVILIZED TRIBES.WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER 500+ Tribes that are recognized by the US government as legitimate tribes? This book doesn't give you help if you want to get information on the Osage or Nez Perez etc.

Full of resources!
Wow, I was not expecting this many resources to be listed and I am so glad I read this book. After finding out I have a small percentage of Native DNA (I suspect Cherokee) my curiosity was peaked. If there is any chance I can find my native ancestor, it will be this book that made it possible. Thank you Suellen Ocean, from someone who loves story telling!
