One of My Favorite Movies as a Kid
This is one of my favorite movies from my childhood so glad to have a copy of it in my movie collection now. This is a sweet romantic comedy about mistaken identity. A young pregnant woman named Connie Doyle born on the wrong side of town in New Jersey, falls in love with a con artist in New York who knocks her up, denies the kid is his, and throws her out on the street. She ends up homeless and living on the streets. A kind gesture by a homeless guy ends up with her on a train heading to Boston and meeting a kindhearted Hugh Winterbourne on board of the train with his heavily pregnant wife Patricia Winterbourne. Patricia and Connie bond in a short period of time and Patricia allows Connie to try on her wedding ring. The train derails and the real Patricia Winterbourne and her husband Hugh are killed in the train crash. Connie wakes up in a hospital in Connecticut already having given birth to a baby boy she names Cookie to everyone thinking she is Patricia Winterbourne because of her wedding band and when she tries to tell them the truth. They think she is delusional and sedates her. When she tries to escape the hospital with her baby, Paco the family butler arrives at the exact moment to drive her home to the Winterbourne estate in Boston. Her mother in law Grace Winterbourne immediately welcomes her and her son who is renamed Hugh after her late son with opened arms. While Bill, the twin brother of Hugh, doesn't believe for one second that this woman is his late brother's wife. She was not even his type and the comedy ensues. With cynical Bill determine to get down to the bottom of his suspicions of this woman with a mother who dismisses everything he says. Things get a little crazier when Bill begins to fall for his maybe or may not be sister in law.I love this movie. I have some many favorite moments in this novie like the comedy chops between son and mother duo Brendan Fraser (Hugh/Bill) and Shirley Maclaine playing his mother Grace. I loved their sacrasm throughout this movie. They played so well off of each other in scenes. The butler Paco played by Miguel Sandoval was also funny and joined in on the fun as a member of the family even the priest, Father Kilraine played by Peter Gerety was funny too. I loved the cute, romantic tango scene when a drunk Paco has Bill and Connie tango to put him to bed and the sweet scene of Bill asking his mother if it was okay to be happy and to love his may or may not be sister in law. I know this role was a breeze for veteran actors like Maclaine and Fraser. Maclaine was so beautiful and elegant as Mother Winterbourne. She glowed on the screen. I loved when she brought a little bit of the Golden Era of Hollywood to the movie in her singing rendition of On the Sunny Side of the Street scene while Bill rolls his eyes and the sarcastic remark he makes to Father Kilraine who simply dismisses it with a smile and little dance of his own. In any role prior to him getting hurt on the set of The Mummy 3, Fraser was a handsome WASP yuppie American Dream in any role he played and commanded the camera's presence when he walked onto the screen. He did a great job of playing hippie, fun loving Hugh Winterbourne at the beginning of the movie then descending down the staircase as the cynical yuppie Bill Winterbourne.I also loved the simple little tropes like Grace having a bad heart but still sneaks and tries to smoke and drink and Bill, Paco, and eventually Connie takes the cigarette or alcoholic beverage away from her without losing a beat in the scene. It is a great movie with the simple message that family comes in all shapes and sizes. One of my favorite moments was when Connie tells Grace she doesn't fit in and the words of encouragement Grace tells her. I guess my only criticism is Ricki Lake casted as Connie is the weakest link as the foul-mouthed misfit and was not believable as someone who was supposed to be in their late teens or early twenties if we're supposed to believe she was eighteen at the beginning of the movie and not knowing how long she stayed with the con artist before she got pregnant and kicked out. To make it believable in my head, I took it as them being together for a few years and she being in her early twenties when she gets pregnant. Luckily, she was surrounded by a strong cast of actors who offset her weakness in the role along with a great script and a great ending. A great movie I have watched on repeat at least twenty times over the years.

Corny but Delicious
It's an old school, formula driven movie that I absolutely love. Yes, you know how it's going to end in the first five minutes, and that's okay. Brendan Frasier is handsome as ever and Ricki Lake is awkward and sweet, and they all live happily ever after. A great escape for a mopey day.

Didnt recognise Ricki Lake initially, but what a good family film. First saw it in Cyprus on TV channel and didnt get to see it all, so ordered when I got home, and glad that I did. Pleasure to sit down and watch a film with a bit of light comedy and a nice ending! Well worth a look
