I am ashamed to admit my igorance of Clive James's erudition; assuming his witty late night television shows to have been the apogee of his achievements when in fact there was far more to his intellectual contribution that was waiting to be consumed. I hear his mellifluous tone and crackling humour as I read each word. This compilation of essays reveals the breath-taking extent of his knowledge and acuity of observation written with inimitable fluidity and precision.

Purchased as a Christmas gift for my husband
I have not read the book myself but my husband thoroughly enjoyed it. Clive James is one of his favourite authors and he specifically requested this particular volume.

A bluffer's guide to Western art and culture, pithily written
Really good, clever but accessible essays, ideal for reading in short bursts on public transport. Serves as a tremendous bluffer's guide to art, literature and culture - you really will feel genuinely well read after a few of these.
