This is the best audiobook of The Odyssey that I have been able to find, but. . .
This is the best audiobook of The Odyssey that I have been able to find! However, as others have stated, the audiobook chapters do not line up with the Books in The Odyssey. I recorded the time for each Book. . . I hope these time stamps will help someone else who needs to know where chapters begin.Book 01 – Chapter 001 @ 00:58Book 02 – Chapter 007 @ 01:20Book 03 – Chapter 012 @ 01:27Book 04 – Chapter 018 @ 04:08Book 05 – Chapter 029 @ 03:15Book 06 – Chapter 035 @ 03:53Book 07 – Chapter 040 @ 00:22Book 08 – Chapter 044 @ 00:40Book 09 – Chapter 051 @ 00:00Book 10 – Chapter 058 @ 00:54Book 11 – Chapter 065 @ 00:50Book 12 – Chapter 074 @ 00:00Book 13 – Chapter 079 @ 04:19Book 14 – Chapter 085 @ 03:03Book 15 – Chapter 092 @ 02:40Book 16 – Chapter 099 @ 01:58Book 17 – Chapter 105 @ 02:59Book 18 – Chapter 113 @ 01:19Book 19 – Chapter 118 @ 03:18Book 20 – Chapter 127 @ 01:02Book 21 – Chapter 132 @ 01:24Book 22 – Chapter 137 @ 03:49Book 23 – Chapter 144 @ 00:00Book 24 – Chapter 149 @ 03:12

I thought I knew the story.
The reader, Ian McKellen does a fantastic job, getting into the persona of the characters speaking. I can’t imagine Homer doing better. I thought I knew the story, but find I was way off. I’m appreciating getting to know the gods better.

Chapaters in the audiobook are terrible.
I used this audible for my class regularly. This school year the chapters were changed, and it does not line up at all with the book that is being read. This is a long epic poem, not a standard chapter book. Aside from the low quality audio and the weird fade in and fade out of the narration, the audible is ok.-2 stars from my initial review due to the change of quality with the product.

Fagles' Beautiful, Approachable Translation & McKellen's Stentorian Narration Make a Perfect Odyssey
All my life, I've heard stories from Homer's Odyssey. I've seen adaptations and allusions of bits and pieces of the Odyssey everywhere from the recent Mr. Peabody and Sherman film to Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief series to Christopher Ford's delightful Stickman Odyssey series. But I'd never consumed the full text. Sir Ian McKellen (who has played Gandalf, Magneto, and many other film roles) reads the text beautifully. The translation by Robert Fagles is both understandable to a modern readable and beautiful in its diction and flow. This amazing piece of work feels like the direct ancestor of modern adventure stories (and many other kinds of stories). I highly recommend this audiobook. Here are a few lines that I liked:* "If any remark of mine gave you offense may stormwinds snatch it up and sweep it off!"* "Even so, you and your crew may still reach home, suffering all the way, if you only have the power to curb their wild desire and curb your own."* "There's no way to hide the belly's hunger-- what a curse, what mischief it brews in all our lives! Just for hunger we rig and ride our long benched ships on the barren salt sea, speeding death to enemies."* "Zeus of the Strangers guards all guests and suppliants; strangers are sacred."* "A bashful man will make a sorry beggar."* "No doubt you count yourself a great, powerful man because you sport with a puny crowd, ill-bred to boot."* "Thanks to your own craven hearts these things were done!"* "Doing good puts doing bad to shame."* "No cries of triumph now. It's unholy to glory over the bodies of the dead."
