I live in Arizona in a semi-rural area where pack rats are a common problem. I have tried mothballs and Irish Spring soap, but these lose their effectiveness as soon as they stop producing any odor. Opening the hood at night or placing lights under the vehicle can be effective but they are a hassle to do every night and forgetting it one night means pack rats get in again. This is the only product I have found that works continuously and requires no more effort after its initial installation. It took me a little longer to install because I removed the alligator clips and crimped on ring terminals for a more secure hold to the battery cables. However, it still only took about 15 minutes to install each one. The magnet holds securely to either the hood or firewall, and you just have to route the wires around and attach them to your battery. It is a good idea to follow the instructions and clean out your engine compartment if rodents have been in there. I used Simple Green, a soft bristle brush, and a garden hose, not a pressure washer, to thoroughly wash out my engine compartments.
