Very good first hand account of LRP's in Vietnam
Written like a journal or diary this is a very detailed account of the first six months of a soldier that served as a LRP. Based on the many letters the author wrote home he was able to recreate with great detail not only the operations that he went on but also the daily life back at camp. The bravery and dedication of these men who went out in six man teams constantly out numbered by the NVA and VC can't be recognized and honored enough. This is a very good book to read to give you just a small idea of what they faced.

HARD TO PUT DOWN
This book reminded me of many events while I was in country. It made me reflect on those days gone by. I enjoyed the writer's chronological order how he wrote this book. I'm sure he used letters sent home to put together all his experiences. I admire these LRP's that served in Vietnam. They were a breed that showed their dedication to serve even if it meant the ultimate sacrifice.

Fast paced and action packed
The author recounts his first six months in Vietnam. It's an action packed, fast paced adventure. Clearly the man has met moment. You go with him as he advances from a scared child to a cool calculating killer. The 's writing style is a pleasure to read. The on!y negative is the frequent ode of profanity.

No nonsense narration
I liked the fact that the author did not bog you down in a bunch of unnecessary background information that did not add to the story. A great introduction into his second bool.

Brotherhood
The story was in a real setting. Following step by step the life/lives on a tight nit group. It’s the way units should be. It’s a story of family and how they come to depend on each other. I would not want my life to be any different.

A Great Read
This is a great read. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in reading about the exploits of "special forces" soldiers in Vietnam. These are not the Green Beret forces, but Long Range Patrol units working "behind the lines." A really great read that moves along very quickly, especially when you consider it is a personal history.

Great book.
At first I was worried that the book would be a sort of list of chronological events in the early career of Linderer. I was pleasantly surprised that the format did not bother me at all. Linderer wrote rather well. He describes things from a very balanced perspective, compared with other authors in this genre: his is neither too "gung-ho" nor is he overly cynical about everything in Vietnam (people, culture). Actually, he is one of the few authors (again, in this genre) that actually seems like a nice guy. He writes about his girlfriend occasionally, and doesn't get drunk and/or visit a prostitute on every other page. The book instead describes intense combat, and does so well. There isn't a lot that would improve this book...I am actually a bit disappointed that I have finished it!

Number 1 GI !
Loved this book.,have read it twice back to back. This is just one of a series of lurp/ sog memoirs that need to be recounted to our generation. The description of the overunning of murderers lurp team and his subsequent wounding is by the nature of small team insertion a forerunner of the story of Marcus luttrels lone survivor. However ,linderers generation were I believe, tougher, better trained without all the modern coms, weapons and cas that modern, pampered special forces have at their disposal today.

Reads like a movie crossed with commando adventure book.
Amazing read. Non fiction tells it like it was. The high adrenaline suspense to the mind numbing boredom. This is the first of two books by Linderer of his time in Vietnam. This book is completely about his tour and does not contain chapters about him dealing with emotional problems like many modern military books.
