Important Things with Demetri Martin: Season 1

Underrated gem and quality dvd
Although a hit so far - a second season is on the way, and the ratings for the series debut were the highest since "Chappelle's Show" in 2003 - "Important Things With Demetri Martin" doesn't appear to have made the hugest possible splash, particularly on DVD or in comparison to some of Comedy Central's bigger shows like "The Daily Show" and "South Park." This is a shame, as the show does a fantastic job of turning Demetri Martin's signature awkward (on purpose), mundane-yet-bizarre, and hilarious comedy to life in a sketch show format. Every episode presents one "important thing" - games, power, timing, etc - and then expands on this general topic through sketches, stand-up material, and even songs. Every episode is peppered with little cartoon segments with Demetri that give Jack Handey a run for his money, recurring characters (e.g. a yellowbelt, the philosopher Demetricles, etc) and tons of great sketches and jokes. Jon Benjamin from "Home Movies" and "Dr. Katz" is a regular, and guest appearances from other greats like David Cross and John Oliver are common. Most every sketch, like Martin's comedy, are great mixes of the mundane realities of life and often absurdly funny humor around them. The DVD itself is good quality for the most part. There are only seven episodes - the first season really was this short - but the price is right for them. There is a feast of great deleted scenes and sketches, generally entertaining and candid commentaries on four episodes and one deleted sketch (Demetri plays guitar through one of them), and a few amusing charts made by Martin that show his strange thought process in the process of making the show. The menus are sometimes a bit slow, but the aesthetic fits well with the show and uses the music from it well. The picture and sound quality are generally just fine for the source material, though viewers might be thrown off momentarily by a few scenes (including some in the intro) that are of very grainy quality; this turns out to be have been on purpose as the scenes were filmed with 70s technology to enhance the feel of the overall show. In general, this is a great show and a pretty solid DVD package that should not be missed by fans of Martin or offbeat comedy.

Very creative
Unique and funny. Not every joke is good but is pretty solid overall. Better than most comedies I watched

Fan of Demetri Martin? Buy this.
My SO and I get a good kick out of this show. If you're a fan of Demetri's standup, you will too. Not a perfect show by any means, but definitely worth a pickup. Just a shame the show only went 2 seasons.

Mom loves it!
My mom mentioned that she liked Demetri Martin, so I bought her this for Christmas. She loves this dvd. I can always tell when she is watching it because she is laughing for the whole length of the show. I've seen both seasons of this so I know how funny and comical Demetri is. His humor isn't for all though, so beware

How I love Demetri
He is the biggest dork, and I say that with adoration! He has me in tears from laughing so hard at some of the sketches in this show. His adorable, innocent face with his silly delivery... this guy just GETS me. I need to purchase the 2nd, because my favorite episode is Lines. On this disc, I think Coolness had me busting up the most.

Demitri Martin "Important Things"
Very clever, fresh and funny. He has a delightful innocence that is refreshing. It's easily digestible since it is divided into 20-minute segments. You can watch one per evening, or two or three segments and then return a few days later to catch a few more.

Quirky Funny
Demetri's quirky sense of humor is a big draw for me. I think Demetri would be more successful if he made the production PG, rather than R ish. His style of comedy does not rely on filth, so this is an unnecessary add on.
