terrific for research or just a great read
Impressive scholarly research has provided us this well-written and interesting book. I enjoyed every aspect of the book, but even more as research on my kinfolk. My GGG-grandfather was captured here (45th VA Indpndt Bn), and the author's insight provided us a wealth of information.BTW, he was sent (as the author correctly reports) by train to the Indianapolis prison camp. He escaped 6 months later, turned up at home in KY for 2 weeks, then reported back to his unit and was carried on the rolls until the end of the war. Prison records show him as Died of Wounds, however - they never reported escapes :-) The Yankee prison doctor - my wife's GGG-grandfather!A great piece of research, and a fine read for history buffs. Highly recommended.

Details about the battle and the people who participated!
Great book! It has genealogical information as well as information about the battle. It helped to fill in areas of heretofore unknown activities of my great grandfather who fought in this battle.

Very well written account of an often over looked battle.
This book is very well researched and written from start to finish! I loved it, and I'm not a book reader.I would highly recomend this book to anyone who is interested in the Shenandoah Valley and it's role in the Civil War!
