The book is in good condition and the service was great
The book is in good condition and the service was great. The information was fascinating and well written. Another example of how people have to cope with unbearable conditions in life--and lessons for all of us.

Good read and generally historically accurate
If you are interested in just what happened during the German occupation of the channel islands this is a good start. Quite interesting. Mostly accurate, although not an indepth account. Might perk you to want more. This book is somewhat the basis for the PBS TV series "Islands at War", that was well received. The series was set in the fictional setting of "St. Gregory" (that would have been Guernsey). Unfortunately, you were rather left hanging as the second season was never made. The writer died and production was stopped and we never found out what happened to the characters. This book helps a bit if you are still wondering. Most of the characters and events had a real basis in life and their fate is known.Islands at War and Enemy at the Door are both available on Amazon as book and Video / TV series. The channel Islands Occupation Society was formed in 1961 and has lots of information and links.[...]

Fascinating History
The story of the Channel Islands during WWII is fascinating. This is really well written and I recommend it. Wish my father was alive to talk to him about it. He was in France and Belgium during the war.

Review
This book is written by one who was not on the Islands during the time of occupation. Therefore it does not have the deep feelings of a book written by one who lived through the German occupation.

Excellent and accurate!
The product is clear and concise. It was accurate and carefully researched. This book is now part of my own historical research into the WWII German occupation of the Channel Islands.

A must read companion to Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society
This is a must read if you have read and loved The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society: A Novel . This book gives a chronological account of the German occupation of the Channel Islands and includes invaluable memories and anecdotes from Islanders themselves of what they endured. A lot of photographs are also reproduced. Both the invaders and the occupied had an extraordinary experience and this book gives you an idea of the conflicted motivations that the Islanders experienced in trying to minimise the damage done by the Germans to their homeland and survive WWII while trying to resist at the same time with literally little room to move. It's a fascinating look at the compromises and actions of people under extreme pressure. The most interesting thing for me in reading this book was in realising what a masterful job the novel had done in accurately presenting the issues the Islanders faced. I can't say that I enjoyed the writing style which I found somewhat dry and unengaging, however the knowledge shared in this book is golden to any students of fascinating history.

Impressive and worthy.
More intimate perspective of German occupation of the only British sovereign territory -- the Channel Islands. McLoughlin gives us personal, insightful examination of occupation that brings the history of the era to a balanced, illuminated state. Living with the Enemy gives us a unique glimpse into what it was like. Highly recommended.

Channel Islands during world war two.
More than I expected. Had read a novel on the Channel Islands and how people had coped during the second world war. This got me interested in the whole story. Seemed like the Channel Islands were almost forgotten during the war. Very good read.

Reactions to an excellent book
'Living with the Enemy' provides an in-depth study of how the Channel Island population - of those that remained to experience neary 5 years of German occupation - and covers 4 of the main islands being Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark. What came over to me was the feeling that if you followed the German rules of occupation then life was relatively quiet and continued on for certainly the first 3 years without undue hardship, compared to mainland European countries that suffered a much stricter regime. The book conveyed a mutual respect between occupier and the occupied as the Germans themselves regarded a posting to the Islands as a quiet retreat away from other war fronts. Life did harden later in the occupation particuarly following the D Day invasion when eventually the Islands were cut off from receiving supplies. Guernsey experienced English investigative commando landings which caused problems particuarly with concealing the soldiers from the Germans though a truce ended with surrenders and transport to POW camps in Europe.Overall the book was revealing and I found myself almost living the life, having previously watched the 'Enemy at the Door' vintage TV series [available as a boxed set of 8 episodes - great value and highly recommended!]. The book is inexpensive, excellent value and well written.

Five years living with the enemy
A nicely written, concise insight into the Channel islands occupation period. With the current re-run of "Enemy at the Door" on TV (Channel 81) it explains a great deal about the relationship between the German occupiers and the islanders portrayed in each episode, and the fairly light-handed authority not experienced in other conquered territories.
