Okinawa: A Decorated Marine’s Account of the Last Battle of World War II

Okinawa: The Whole Story
I had read EB Sledges book on Okinawa "With the Old Breed" which was excellent, so thought I knew all about it, but actually he covers his personal experience from the fox hole. Leckie gives you the background of how the Japanese thought. He shows the battle plans of both sides, he covers the sea battles and the battles in the air, which a Marine on the ground would not know about. I was enthralled with the whole concept of the book. And of course he does cover the Marines in action. This is the second book I have read by Leckle, the first being "Pillow For My Helmet", and find him to be an outstanding and thoughtful writer. I am now reading my third book by him and have another waiting in the wings. He has written over 40 books.

Great Book
I really enjoy all of Robert Leckie's books. Solid writing and as a former marine combat veteran that he was I think that only adds to the subject of war in the a Pacific that he knew all so well.I read his other book "Helmet for my Pillow " which I also enjoyed very much. Nice book to own for your library.

Excellent account of the battle of Okinawa.
This book was different than the ones where he actually was in battle. I learned things about the Okinawa battle I never knew before. Leckie was a great combat author. His first hand accounts of battle are riveting.

Awesome Read
Factual and descriptive - from both sides. If there was a negative, it would be that there were no maps included, but Mr. Leckie did an excellent job with this (as well as all of his books)..

A good read to understand their battle and significance of Okinawa.
Lots of details which serve as a reminder of the great sacrificed made by members of the armed services. It was a little difficult to keep up with the details of which unit was where,it does help vividly bring the reader into the fog of war. The personal stories of real life heroes was a highlight for me.

L'ultima battaglia
