Is it the same tooth every time that makes the croc chomp down??

No. Each time you open his mouth it resets to a different tooth

Is the quality good on it? Just received one like it and it was broken.

The quality of the one I received was good. My grands are still playing with it. We haven't had any issues yet.

With the version from 20 yrs ago, the sore tooth was harder to press down, so you'd know when the chomp was going to happen. Is this still the case?

Ever so slightly, yes. What I've discovered is that there is a tiny bit more resistance to the "sore" tooth, but I have also been fooled many times with what I thought was the sore tooth and it wasn't. The rule in our house, just in case someone discovers this fault, is that you have to pick a tooth and then push it down so you can't change your mind if you feel a bit more resistance.
