Great book
If you know the basics, this book is great. For me this is an awesome book (even to give as a gift is perfect), some recipes are really easy to make, like the 'Pita Crisps" that even a kid can prepare. But the good thing is that this recipes are not intimidating, on the opposite, they are inviting. The variety of recipes is great and then you get the basic dough, creams, meringues, how to melt chocolate, make mayonnaise, caramel, etc. It also gives you hints and tips like for example how many days you can store the food after you cook them or in advance. It's helpful, informative, with lots of beautiful, vibrant pictures.

Beautiful, useful, educational, creative
I made 3 recipes out of this book for a party the day I received it, all three for things I had never attempted to make previously - and all 3 were a huge success. I have successfuly used it several times since, and while many recipes can be time consuming if you don't plan ahead, there are a few fairly simple and quick ones. It is porbably not for you if you are only looking for simple appetizer ideas or if you don't want to purchase somewhat advanced pastry utensils (i.e. fluted cookie cutters and tartlet forms), but as other reviewers have said, it is an excellent inspiration for those of us who love to cook.

Love this book!
I bought this book based on the reviews. It did not dissappoint. The pictures and written instructions are great. I like entertaining and needed some new ideas for quick, small bites that could also be somewhat prepped ahead of time. This book provides those tips and the additional info so you know which recipes will work best for you and your time parameters. I am looking forward to sampling at least 80% of the mouth watering recipes in this book. The presentation level or "the look" of the various offerings is high. It is visually sophisticated....yet uncomplicated. Seriously....get the book.

One of the better appetizer cookbooks we've bought
We've really enjoyed this book. Pretty much all the recipes have photos next to them, which really helps us decide. We've tried several of the recipes and had good luck so far. They're not all amazing, but they've all been quite good, and there are a lot of recipes that look hard (impressive) but really aren't. We also love the make-ahead hints included with each recipe. It'll be great for the upcoming holidays!

pretty photos with every dish
We do many parties in our house and I am always looking for recipes or cookbooks for appetizers, fingerfood, and hors d'oeuvres books. I own many of these books, and this book is one of my favorites. To me, a good cookbook needs to have easy steps to follow with great photos. I also recommend "the essential fingerfood" by Borders, "hors d'oeuvres" by Williams-Sonoma, and "Asian Tapas" by Christophe Megel. These three books have photos for each dish. Also, you can look up "hors d'oeuvres" by Gillian Duffy, and "amuse-bouche" by Rick Tramonto. These two books have a reasonable numbers of photo inside.

Best appetizer book EVER!
I wanted some new party recipies. I purchased several different titles and read thru all. By far this was the best. I do agree that the editing is a little off. You need to be careful that you read the ingredients and make sure you know which dish you are preparing. What I really love is the way this book is organized. It makes it easy to select several completely different hors d'oeuvres that will keep your guests interested. I have already tried 3 of the recipes and had great results. BUY IT!

Great book for the verteran and novice
It's all you could want in a cook book for throwing parties. Gives you great details, pictures of almost every single item, steps on how to make them in clear dumbed-down english so you can't be confused or overwhelmed. And the best part is I haven't made a single thing that hasn't been very tasty and demanded for the next time. if you like to entertain, this will definitely spruce up your menu.

recipes too complicated
I was looking for simple appetizer ideas. This is not the right resource for simple. While most of the recipes sound wonderful, most of them are way complicated with many steps. I searched elsewhere for appetizer recipes and found great ones that are easy. They are Pillsbury recipes using their pizza crusts, crescent rolls, breadsticks, and pie crusts as the base for wonderful fillings and toppings. I found the recipes online for free.

Take care
Be warned. This book is exactly the same content as the other book by the same authors entitled Canapรฉs. If you have that one, you don't need this. I suspect that Hors d'ouvres is the title for the U.S. print.

Highly recommended
Informative, easy, straightforward recipes and oodles of 'how to...' alongside, 'how long before..' use. Can see using this book a great deal.
