A brand new jacket will absorb little; this would be plenty for several applications. I've used the 6 oz size on my new motorcycle seat multiple times, glooves, boots, etc - still lots left. Apply sparely as per directions. This stuff is great!

Q: Will this help soften a new leather vest

Yes, Skidmore's is excellent with softening up and conditioning new leather. Give it shot, you won't be disappointed.

Q: I plan to use on a leather couch - is there any residue after application that could come off and stain or damage clothing?

No residue at all if you follow the instructions. The leather I treated--two motorcycle jackets--one over 18 years old--are still soft and the leather odor is great! Follow the instructions and you cannot go wrong.
