Bought this for my son 5 mos ago and we both love it! The action is just a little bit sticky when you engage the spool after opening the bail to cast, but it's not so bad that I still don't really like this reel (would be a 5 rating otherwise). The price belies the performance too- it would go for closer to $100 in a sports store, or more, and people wouldn't think twice about it. The cast and retrieve are ultra-smooth and the gear ratio is just right for lake fisherman and inland coastal fishing. The materials are anti-corrosive and the unit is solidly made and has not come loose in any way since we began using it. We catch bass, cat, walleye, crappie- you name it- and we just love the reel. If you are a beginner to an avid fisherman you will not be disappointed, and you can spend a bit more on a rod a these prices too.

I really wanted to like this reel based on the feedback of others. I mated this to a 6' 6" Ugly Stick Gx2 Medium Heavy with 12lb mono and the balance point was perfect. The feel only came close to my Fenwick and Penn Battle 2 combo costing over 2x as much. Amazing match. However, the bail would not stay in the open position. This was isolated to the 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock position relative to the rod looking down (IOW, reel below rod). The reel is incredibly smooth, construction and aesthetics are phenomenal and drag progressiveness was linear and smooth. Anti-reverse better than my Shimano Sedona 5000 FE but not quite on par with my Penn Battle II but a close 2nd. This reel would be the deal of the century if it had worked properly. I'm gonna try for replacement and hopefully it comes in okay and I'll update the review accordingly. Update 11/16/2015: I returned the 1st reel 40 and replaced it with a 30. So far so good -- 2 days of fishing on a 3 different rods and it is as smooth as can be. The folding handle is quite handy, casting is great, and the drag is linear. No surprises -- great product so far
