Q: How easily does the top come off? Can you just undo the large clasps on the sides or are there screws/bolts as well?

There are just the clasps, no screws or bolts. It should come apart easy.

Q: The vendor's posted are for 2 different items. #2 has gives the height as 12.6", in #5 it's 10.2". Which is it?

12.6" is the top to the bottom of the carrier; 10.2 is the height of the door.

Q: is the ferplast dog carrier IATA airpline travel approved ?

I don't know if it is. It's pretty flimsy and I don't recommend anyone buying it.
