This is a book I actually struggled to rate, and I decided ultimately to lean on the side of the merits of the book for a typically developing kiddo, as opposed to how useful I feel like this book would be for my own child's situation. Our sweet son has Autism, among other things, and I purchased this book with a group of other Daniel Tiger books because I have recently discovered he is more willing to accept new books if they closely parallel some of his favorite TV shows or episodes. One of the struggles our son has is accepting new things, he likes what he likes, in the order he likes it in. Now this book does very closely parallel an episode in season 2, so it gets high marks for that. And I think that the plot line is cohesive and solidly written. This isn't a book with enchanting prose per se, but since it's meant to be easily understood by children to help get them willingly into cooperating with a bedtime routine with their parents I can't fault it for that. It's that routine bit that's a bit more of a "can bite you in the backside hard" element of this book. Our son, like many kiddos with Autism, can get super fixated on a routine. To the point where I try really hard to limit the fixed routines, or what we get is a super intense meltdown that can last upwards of an hour that can leave you feeling like you were hitting it hard at the gym by the time your done helping to manage that and keep him safe. Every parent's approach is different, but my approach is to warn him what's going to be happening, so he's prepared and can expect it, but to shake things up a lot. So that his routine is to expect things will be different. Baths might happen sometimes in the night, sometimes in the morning. Sometimes it's a shower. That sort of thing. So there are some consistent themes, but I keep it random, because that's actually the best way to keep my little man from melting down. And this book really, really drums in the routine bit. So for me, I also have to make sure this isn't the bedtime book we try to read him every night, nor even every other night. Nor can he be read to every night. Because if any one thing happens to throw off what he expects every night, bam. A whole bunch of unhappiness ensues. So that's why for me, the overemphasis of routine in this book wasn't my favorite, because I don't really want him reinforced in the rigidity of his thinking on the matter, because it won't help him long term and it won't help anyone working with him long term. But from the developmental standpoint, for a typically developing child, routines are comforting and provide stability without the same levels of drama and difficulty when they have to be deviated from, so personally, I think that's the market this book is best for.
