The Truth About Emanuel [Blu-ray]
S**A
Depth of human psychology & complexity of life &love is what you come across. You are not spoon fed the story line.
this is an amazing movie. The depth of human psychology it reaches is very heavy. The search for love in a distorted life dealt into your hands. Not knowing how to deal with life and realizing your not alone. Being strong enough while seeking your own shortcomings and understanding of life to learn that you can try to save others that come across your path. The complexity of human emotions is amazing in this movie. The writing was intriguing, simple and clever at the same time. The artistic aspects of the movie allowed you to use your own mind in reaching an understanding of the story line without being spoon fed the ending. Your brain was shocked, hungry for understanding and your heart warmed by the exchange of love between two strangers, between father and daughter, between a stepmother and stepdaughter and between two young adults being faced with multi levels of emotions while growing into adulthood in a life yet to be lived.

Better than expected. (Not really a Thriller, definitely not Horror or Supernatural, but an eerie and engaging Drama it is.)
Don't be fooled by the synopsis or trailer into believing one way or another about the film.Instead of obsession, strange attractions, or chilling secrets, The Truth About Emanuel has much more depth and originality.Even the most jaded of movie buff's will find this story interesting and worthwhile.Within the first 20 minutes or so, you'll have a good idea of where things are headed, but the big reveal isn't all that's offered as far as keeping you captivated throughout.I try to give away as little as possible while offering just enough to pass along a recommendation via these reviews so I'll stop here. It's no masterpiece but if you've watched just about everything that's available and interesting, you'll probably be glad you stumbled upon it.

Living underwater
What happens when two damaged people discover they have experienced complementary tragedies? In a perfect world, which this movie portrays, they help to heal each other. If only that was the way things happen in real life. But this is a dreamy sort of film, with the main character, Emanuel (Kaye Scodelario), experiencing hallucinations and essentially living in a world of her own. Her tragedy is that her mother died giving birth to her, and she blames herself. When a new neighbor, Linda (Jessica Biel) moves in, it seems obvious that she has experienced a tragedy of her own. Or has she? To me, the answer to that question was clear from the beginning, but some people might wonder until the truth is revealed near the end. Meanwhile, Emanuel's stepmother, Janice (Frances O'Connor), has a secret sorrow of her own which could have been eased a little if Emanuel had been willing to build any kind of relationship with her. Instead, she is resentful and angry toward her stepmother. She could hardly react any other way as long as she hangs onto her guilt about killing her own mother.Bottom line: A lot of very flawed people, at least two of whom should have been in therapy, making their way through life the best way they can, which is to say, not very well. I would give 2.5 stars but I went ahead and gave the extra half star because the performances, especially of the secondary characters, were excellent.

Touching Movie. Beautiful & Emotional.
Upon reading the reviews for this film, I was expecting a slow paced and possibly an emotionally confusing story, but having watched this film, I feel it has gone hideously unappreciated. The beginning is a bit slow, and it's hard to connect to the characters initially, but the bond created between the teenager and woman is both rare and rather gripping. This movie has a lovely dynamic, and deals with the issues of loss and emotional well being in a very dramatic and elaborate manner that should not go unappreciated.All-in-all, this story is very quiet, idyllic and memorable, and if you are someone who appreciates the relationship one can build with a movie, then definitely waste no more time and give it a watch.I recommend it to anyone who struggles to understand the existential meaning of life and death. And the profound feeling of sadness one feels with the loss of a loved one.

Expected Twist
Expected Twist that was portrayed so beautifully - Biel gave an absolutely stellar performance - it truly didn't matter that this viewer expected the twist. The movie had an almost surreal effect about it that swiftly draws the viewer in and engages them fully. I can agree with another reviewer that commented this film isn't for everyone, but for those that choose to stick around for the ride - I think they'll feel rewarded by the wonderful acting, characters that seem like people you might already know, and the puzzling twists and turns that can give a déjà vu feel while surprising one slightly. No spoilers here, watch for yourself. I recommend this movie.

Not what you expect
This movie is more about grief and loss then anything else. I was drawn in by the main character's personality and the acting of the young actress. Emanuel is 17 turning 18 and she has lived her life without her mother. Her mother died giving birth to her and she has unresolved guilt and grief over that. In comes her new neighbor, Linda, a young single mother of an infant. Emanuel begins babysitting for her and soon a bond develops. But it is not what you think or even like what the synopsis leads you to believe. It's more about a mother/daughter relationship/longing that helps Emanuel heal. There is a twist to this movie, which is revealed about 20 minutes in, that I won't reveal here, but if you are sharp you will see it coming before it is revealed. All in all a good movie. It's more of a drama then anything.

Fantastic film, great acting
Great movie written and directed by Francesca Gregorini. At first i thought it was a bit too crazy with the fake baby etc, But the acting was so good at points that it drew me in with Emmanuel(Kaya Scodelario) who was fantastic as the lead character/actress. It was a tragic story of loss and healing- I could understand it for many reasons and so can anyone who has not had the relationship they wanted with their mother, who has not had a sister and or who has lost a child or a mother or a close female relative. Emmanuel and Linda( Jessica Biel) finally help each other to begin to heal. Fantastic music by Agnes Obel for the soundtrack. Don't miss it.

A great film....
A great film.... Kaya Scodelario is one of the most talented new actresses of the 21st century . having seen her in a couple of British TV drama & short films. i thought this was a British movie until Kaya first spoke & I saw the first scene of this movie & it was for sure American. For a young British actress to play a American girl so well just shows her ever growing talent. the film is an odd one with a chilling meaning & story line somewhat sad at times but well worth seeing....
