What are the differences between the first gen Uni-Fi and this?

The UB52 has all newly designed speakers and a crossover revision, essentially creating an all new speaker design with similar sound characteristics to the UB5, It also is front ported, the older UB5 was rear ported. The sound signature is very similar between the two models, so that they would integrate OK in a surround system, for example. However, they are not identical sounding. In my opinion, I feel the midrange is a little more recessed, and the bass is not as prominent in the UB52. I also note a bit of harshness in female singer voices, and instruments in this same frequency region (some may call this more detailed, I call it annoying), which I think possibly is related to the redesigned tweeter being crossed over too low from the midrange in the UB52. Andrew Jones may disagree with me on this, though. Otherwise these are very good sounding speakers, and image well. For these reasons, I prefer the previous generation UB5's, which to my ears are close to the ideal compromise for sound to price performance, and are now my standard for comparison with similar price/performance speakers.. Both use high excursion aluminum 5" woofers, and concentric 4' mid/1" satin dome tweeter drivers. The UB5 is rear ported, the UB52 is front ported, and thus taller and slimmer than the UB5.The UB5 has magnetic grilles and premium 5 way connectors, the UB52 has pegged grills and the same 5 way connectors as in the lower Elac models, neither of which affect the sound. Both are more detailed and neutral sounding speakers, as opposed to a "warm" sounding speaker, such as the Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2, a 2 way speaker which deserves some consideration at half the cost. You can compare the other specs for either speaker online, as well as many review opinions for either model. Warning, opinion follows here! The Debut 2.0 B6.2 is warmer, fuller sounding, goes deeper and sounds more prominent in the bass, and although not as detailed or analytical (accurate?) as the UB5 or UB52, reproduces just about any voice or musical presentation satisfactorily. They sound bigger than they are, you might say. This of course, is my opinion, your opinion may differ. I prefer, in order, first the UB5, then the Debut 6.2, Debut 5.2, then the UB52....just better bang for the buck. I don't like "scratchy" vocals, even if slight. Another good alternative is the Elac Debut 5.2, which has almost the identical sound as the Debut 6.2, with a little bit less bass. It would be a good consideration for someone living in an apartment, as the lower bass is slightly less likely to annoy neighbors (at reasonable volumes, of course), and costs less. It is very good for providing full range sound when teamed with a subwoofer, and crossed over at 70-80 Hz, at still probably less cost to the UB52, which also benefits from a sub..One more thing, yes, I do own all of these mentioned speakers, and the opinions I hold are based on what I heard in my listening room.
