Sinoceratops Redux
2020 Mattel Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous Primal Attack “Sound Strike” Sinoceratops Perhaps the biggest blunder with the 2018 Fallen Kingdom toyline, was the “Sinoceratops” Roarivore figure. Due to a species change during production, Pachyrhinosaurus was changed to Sinoceratops. This left Mattel in a lurch, as they had already sculpted a beautiful Pachyrhinosaurus. Universal wanted representation for the major dinosaurs in the film, but Mattel did not have time to make a new sculpt. So, the Pachyrhino was repainted to match the Sinoceratops from the film, and released with an incorrect name. Fast forward to 2020, and the new Primal Attack line. Sinoceratops is making its triumphant return in the Netflix series “Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous”, and Mattel finally has a chance to redeem themselves. How did they do? In a word; phenomenal! The sculpt is beautifully detailed, and is very accurate to its on screen counterpart. The head features much larger and more expressive eyes than the 2018 Pachyrhino/Sino figure, and is covered in some great scale detail. The face itself is more of a rhino-like wrinkly skin, with an occasional scale. This transitions smoothly into full scalation, with scales of varying sizes. They’re all individually sculpted, and look incredibly lifelike. The horns and beak have a decent bit of weathering details. They do appear to be a bit oversized, but that’s just comparing them to the Fallen Kingdom render. Perhaps Camp Cretaceous will feature larger horns. The frill includes the open hole design seen in the movies, as well as the curving frill spikes. It also features the extra pachyrhino style horns in the center of the frill, a vestige of the Fallen Kingdom, late production, redesign. There are some very large scales on the frill which are nearly identical to the large scales on the Jurassic Park Triceratops; these touches help to emphasize the ceratopsian family ties. The body is quite large. It easily beats the Nasutoceratops in size. The figure is highly detailed with wrinkles, folds, and lots of nice scalation. Some of the scales are quite large, and others appear to be more like osteoderms. The outline of the rib cage can be seen slightly through the skin, and there are some nice bunches of sagging skin sculpted around the belly. The legs and tail are detailed to the same extent as the rest of the body. I especially like the large, knobby scales at the base of the tail, as well as the folds of skin on the joints of the legs. Coloration is similar to the 2018 release. The pattern and color of the markings on the face are virtually identical. The only real differences have to do with the drastic change in skull shape between the two. However, the main body color is quite a bit different than the original. I believe this is reflected in the animated series as well. The body markings are pretty lacking compared to the original release. The back patterning only goes from shoulder to hip. The Fallen Kingdom release continued all the way down the tail. The original also featured some nice counter shading along the belly and legs. This figure has no counter shading at all. The toes are also left unpainted, but they were unpainted in the original as well. The beak and eyes are painted beautifully, as are the horns. The horns are a very dark grey. This helps the figure stand out among most of the other ceratopsians of the line, as they have mostly ivory colored horns. The jugal horns, however, are left unpainted. I’m not sure why that is. It’s rather odd to leave them unpainted when every other horn is painted beautifully. Articulations are the standard for the larger ceratopsians. The legs can move forward and back, and the rear legs can pivot outwards slightly. The rest is tied to the Primal Attack action, which is identical to the Sound Strike Triceratops. You simply move the tail up and down to trigger a ramming action, or twist it to make the head twist in the corresponding direction. The action seems to be much smoother on the Sinoceratops than on the Triceratops. The sounds are amazing! They are, legitimately, some of the best sounds of any Jurassic World figure so far! Other than the stomping sounds, I don’t think there are any recycled sounds at all. The bellows sound like they were pulled directly from the source. Mattel is really improving in the sound department. Every one of these new Sound Strike figures have had excellent sound samples, unlike the first few Sound Strike figures from the beginning of the year. Overall, I’m more than happy with this figure. Yes, the paint applications could have been better. However, the amazing sculpt, wonderful sound design, and smooth action features outweigh any negatives. This is one many have been looking forward to since 2018, and I’m happy to say that it was worth the wait.

Génial
Vraiment top.
