No, the bar is fixed. This is a wonderful bed tray and we are using it more often. Well made.

Has the quality of wood improved compared to what? It's an inexpensive bed tray. I haven't gotten any splinters. It is surprisingly sturdy. A good value.

I like the quality. It's sturdy, my 8 year old dropped it and nothing has happened. We've left drinks on it, no water rings, easy to clean. It really holds up well when we use it for our laptops or as a food tray.
