Q: Does this item have a chemical or other unpleasant smell?

No unpleasant smell. It has a covering. I used it for recovery from surgery. I needed to sleep at an angle and sit at an angle for a few weeks after surgery. It was a cheap alternative to renting or buying one of those special chairs that assist you.

Q: Was yours this expensive when you got it?

I paid $184 plus tax. I was desperate at the time. I was in a lot of pain because I needed to have my hip replaced and my BMI was too high. (I was too fat!) I could only sleep at a certain angle and position. This pillow system worked. I lost the 50 pounds eventually, and I have kept it off. And I have my new hip which is superb. Happy ending. Not sure if I understand the question but the width is the same for all pieces... 24 inches wide.
