The Mobile Poultry Slaughterhouse: Building a Humane Chicken-Processing Unit to Strengthen Your Local Food System

An excellent how-to
Even if one is not oneself planning on creating a mobile chicken slaughterhouse system, this is an excellent book! For one thing- it's good to know this is a possibility. There are fewer and fewer slaughterhouses every year, and so a small-scale farmer- be s/he commercial or personal- has fewer and fewer options every year. Taking the equipment to the critters is a LOT less stressful for them than trucking them maybe 250-500 miles! And while this is mostly about chickens, with a quick shout-out to turkeys, there are intriguing hints that some people are doing similar things for beef, lamb, pork, etc.The directions are fairly comprehensive, but don't cover everything; I think one would do well to apprentice under someone who knows what they're doing. While most of the book emphasizes doing everything legally and transparently, there are also some mentions of farms that do their own slaughtering sub-rosa, and the tome is fairly approving. If we want healthy, farm-raised, pastured meat, the mobile slaughterhouses are a very sensible approach to such, and it is great that someone is making a start-up approach so accessible. I hope lots of people and organizations start such! Meanwhile, I also hope that someone adds to this by including ducks and geese (maybe with a discussion of small-scale foie gras?), as well as beef, pork, and lamb.

This book has some basic ideas that can be used ...
This book has some basic ideas that can be used to springboard a similar operation. However, I was wanting something more direct about having a mobile processing unit that could be used as a business for someone.

a good read, none the less
No blueprints of the mobile slaughterhouse. Just a book writing about how to go about getting the other poultry growers to form a group and purchase the slaughterhouse as a group. I was expecting to see pics of their set-up, with specific instructions on HOW to build it, get it USDA approved, etc. But, a good read, none the less.

Good information...
Prior to doing anything like this I would suggest reading this book. Many questions are answered... I will also do more research for requirements in my area, but this is a great help.

Great book!
I love this book! It has inspired me to do so many things I am currently doing. If you want to know about butchering birds and the law that surrounds this process then this is the book for you. Even just the equipment set up diagrams pay for this book. It explains everything you need to know.

Excellent read
I would recommend this product to all small scale chicken farmers. It is very informative and clearly written and illustrated. Thanks Ali - all the way from Red Barn Free Range chickens in South Africa.
