Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking

Best Sherlock ever
The music score, alone, in and of itself is captivating......This is not the stodgy Sherlock Holmes of yesterday... Open our minds, let them not be closed or narrowed. Wise men and women still look ahead, beyond the horizon. This film portrays a couple of really cool characters, (reminiscent of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). Sherlock is, yes, flawed, aren't we all ????? Yet brilliant and heroic in his pursuit of ruthless, demented minds....Both lead characters are very believeable.. easy to relate to.. and Sherlocks' techniques in seeking clues are most inspiring..PBS Masterpiece Theatre gives us only high quality work.. This film is only for those who are above the usual fare seen on commercial television. (no disrepect intended, just a different type) I am happy to see a departure from the near comatose Sherlock of old to a new, younger and vibrant Detective and Doctor Watson, both still totally dedicated and passionate in the cause of justice, and saving souls. The drama....photography, performance, and script is exemplary......

Surprisingly Good
I honestly didn't expect much from this film. I've been a Sherlockian since I was 11 and have watched a lot of mostly bad Holmes films. But this one was very pleasantly surprising.I like Everett's job as Holmes. I thought he played Holmes as more upper-class and more formal than some (Brett, for example). I was impressed with the writing, especially in the scenes between Holmes and Watson. Actually, that's where this film shines, in the Holmes and Watson relationship. There are some off notes in the writing. Watson's fiance, for example. Some aspects of the mystery. But overall, I was intrigued and enjoyed myself. I can say this is one of my favorite film versions of Holmes. I would love to see Everett play the character again.

A Different Take on Familiar Ground
In a radical departure from the usual screen portrayals of Sherlock Holmes, Rupert Everett brings an air of whimsy and debauchery to the role of the famed detective in "Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking". Drug-addled and fey, with his top hat and tux, this Holmes cuts a glamorous swath through London high society as he tries to stop a murderer preying on Victorian debs. Never once do we spy his deerstalker or twill overcoat, although Arthur Conan Doyle made it clear in his famous stories that Holmes was fashion-conscious, utilizing this synonymous outerwear as part of a disguise, and not as part of his daily wardrobe. While not an actor who immediately pops into one's mind as an ideal casting choice for Holmes, Rupert Everett gives an interesting interpretation of the role; for once, his sometimes unbearable class-conscious hauteur works in favor of his character (as it did in "My Best Friend's Wedding"). Not an actor of great depth, Everett still manages to bring a sense of world-weary fatalism to his role, along with a certain amount of good humor and class. As has been previously pointed out in an earlier review, Ian Hart, as Dr. Watson, has none of the bumbling, well-intentioned loopiness of Nigel Bruce. This Dr. Watson is smart and dapper, a good foil for Holmes. He's also kind-hearted, courageous, and brave, qualities that serve him well as he races through the fog-shrouded streets attempting to stop yet another murder. I'd have liked to see more of his American fiancee, as she also provided an interesting counterpoint to the Holmes character. In supporting roles, Perdita Weeks and Michael Fassbender stand out as, respectively, a grand lady and her footman. As Lestrade, Neil Dudgeon has little screen time, and there is none of the good-natured banter between him and the detectives that characterized the classic Hollywood films. All in all, I liked this film. It's a different take on familiar territory, and purists will probably be offended or put off. I found it both chilling and amusing, atmospheric and very suspenseful, especially the climax, which is both creepy and edgy.

Great movie for a pastiche.
We had this movie on VHS and wanted to have it on disc. It's a great twist to Sherlock Holmes and I love the character that Doyle created and this is another characterization of Holmes that is plausible and entertaining. After all, that's what it's all about, eh?

More jerk than genius
Everyone knows Sherlock Holmes is a genius, especially Sherlock Holmes. Rupert Everett plays the sleuth as a heartless and arrogant jerk in this movie. He deliberately and secretly allows a girl to be kidnapped to prove how clever he is, only his trap fails. Then another girl falls victim to the killer because he was too conceited to share his plan with Lestrade, played like a deer caught in the headlights by a young Neil Dudgeon (Inspector Barnaby part deux). Dr Watson is supposed to be his friend, but all he does is carp and complain about Holmes. He stands out awkwardly like a sore thumb. The upper classes all act like they can't wait until he leaves so they can go wash their hands. His fiancee also makes a brief appearance. She is just as self-absorbed as Holmes, and just as unpleasant. The rest of the supporting cast are completely forgettable. There really is no one to like in this movie and the major vibe throughout is acrimonious. The script is totally original- not based upon any book or short story by ACD. The plot is weak and convoluted because the director tries to keep the killer's identity a secret until the end. It deserves maybe 2.5 stars. It's not terrible, but there are so many better versions out there.

You're either going to really like this movie or you won't.
I liked this Sherlock Holmes movie. Some people won't like it due to the subject matter, or that the story wasn't an AC Doyle original, but it's a fresh take on Holmes, and above all, entertaining. All the actors did a fine job. Rupert Everett plays a less dry, but more moody Holmes. I particularly like Ian Hart's portrayal of Watson; Hart also played Watson in 2002's Hound of the Baskervilles, which I think was excellent. Neil Dudgeon does a nice Lastrade. There's a lot of London fog in this movie, which I like.

Non male
Forse non il migliore Sherlock Holmes di tutti i tempi, ma godibile. Tipica atmosfera da Londra vittoriana e storia avvincente.

It was great to see a new Sherlock
It was great to see a new Sherlock, even though this Sherlock was very unSherlockian. He had the wrong guy detained, recklessly endangered a girl, and just seemed to be too much of a slacker

gelungene BBC Verfilmung
Also, ich muss sagen, dass diese Verfilmung der Geschichte "Sherlock Holmes and the case of the silver stocking" wirklich gelungen ist.

An enjoyable film!
I enjoyed the film. It wasn't a bad effort, although I have to say that Rupert Everett would not have been my first choice to play the part of Holmes and I would not have made Watson's fiancée (wife at the end of the film) an American. However, these are all minior flaws and if one doesn't mind the fact that the story the film is based on is not one of Doyle's, then this is an enjoyable film with an interesting cast that includes Michael Fassbender, subtle hints relevant to the original Sherlock Holmes stories and older Sherlock Holmes films and a good plot.
